^^^ I've heard about "extreme" boulderers shedding layers to reduce weight. Still, I can't figure out the boots... Perhaps, if he cut off the tops, he could claim a grade or two more.

I had one encounter with Fawcett and Jill. I don't think they were married at the time. Two climbers I hooked up with in Camp 4 and I were slogging up the West Face of El Cap, our first grade VI. This was 1980, so I think the route had only recently been freed. We were on our second day, and I was aiding a slanting, overhanging crack, and I looked down to see a fast-approaching party. Soon four were on the ledge below, and Ron started up the pitch after me, although I had yet to make the belay. I pulled the lip and stepped to one side and he flowed that overhang like it was nothing and sprinted to the ledge. They were in for a one day ascent. Some of you may recall an article that Jill Kent wrote about the climb--in Climbing I think. We were "the blokes" she refers to. Fawcett was quite nice and efficient about climbing through and I had no problem with it. As I was finishing the last bit, he hauled up their gear, a small bag and a couple of water bottles. He said, having, of course, seen our fat haul pig, said, "I bet you wish your bag was this light! My bag's at the other end of the line.... Sorry 'bout that, luv!"
A classic encounter.

walked past thin red line 15 years ago,
it looked pretty casual
never got back
is that formation still there
or have the russians moved it?
