Hi, I'm just back from a trip to Yosemite after a 25 year absence and that brought up memories about this accident.
I was working at Curry the summers of '75 and '76 and knew Peter's wife Kathy (she was the manager at the Curry front desk and she and I both grew up in Sunnyvale so kind of bonded). One day two rangers came in to the office, asked if I knew Kathy and having said yes, they asked if I could step outside with her and them. Long story short, they had come to tell her Peter had fallen and passed away. I will never forget that moment. Kathy was in shock, but kept it together so well, I remember that after all these years. She left with the rangers and I believe witnessed the helicopter crash with Peter's body in it.
Later she told me about the ceremony at the top of El Cap to spread his ashes and that an eagle had swooped by several times.
I only met Peter a couple of times when he came by work for Kathy, but have wondered all these years what happened to her. Any information much appreciated.
