I've often wondered about Sachse Monument, and looked at it a lot.
My guess would be a bit chossier, ledgier and less steep than you'd want,
but probably pretty nice anyway. Maybe some short sections of Class 5
with lots of easier wandering.
There's climbing to do around there, but everything turns out to be
smaller than you think.

even though the gouge of despair is closer to the road i believe its more remote. being far from the road does not make something more remote. there are places in Angeles National Forest that are more remote & less traveled than you might think. hiking into white divide is great either from the north or south.

No, I had hoped to try a traverse of the whole thing but being alone and there being thunderstorms I decided to leave it for another day.

Yeah, these things are hard to define. Where is the hardest place in California to get to? Tough one.

Cool stuff, I had suspected someone had worked this out. Did you find a detailed map of California or how did you work the spot out? I can't find a decent map by searching the web.

There is national map here:
http://www.fort.usgs.gov/products/publications/21426/21426.pdf
But the resolution is to low to learn much. The GIS data it is based on is here:
http://rmgsc.cr.usgs.gov/trip/data/
I am not familiar with GIS software but I did manage to open up the California files. Sadly, I don't know enough about this stuff to get much detail but the image I got is sort of interesting.
I managed to see this with an open source program found here:
