Into big butts way before Sir Mix Alot.

The movie was Crumb, I saw it years ago and remember his brother as a hoarder. Odd realism.

His brother was very strange. If I remember correctly he swallowed string and let pass through his body. I am usually wrong though.
Might have been mentioned in previous posts, but Crumb also dod the Cheap Thrills album cover.

one of his brothers did the string cleansing thing,
the other brother eventually committed suicide

if there were ever an example of an artist unable and unwilling to repress their inner most feelings and thoughts at such a primal level, R. Crumb is one, a fascinating individual who somehow copes with his life, perhaps his artistic success saved him

the documentary Crumb 1994 directed by Terry Zwigoff is in the Netflix list... it is pretty amazing.

I remember going to the record store in the late 70’s, and there over there to the side of the pipe and bong section, atop the glass case would be a three copies of Freak. I had no point of reference to my small town West Coast life, but I knew Freak represented something strange, that was near and afoot. Went and saw the Genesis drawings at an art museum a month or so ago and it was a drag, I suppose in a way the sparse crowd was not conducive to my furtive glances at the more risqué verses depicting certain actions of certain women. An olding man in an art museum forgetting the thirteen year old in the head shop; nostalgia it’s a bitch.

I always thought it true that Zap delivered like "Armando delivers his stilleto" and still do.

He was not only tripy but accurate, evocative and w/ crazy skillz as an illustrator. You know it's Crumb the moment you see it.

Over the years there have been reprints of the early "Zap" ComiX available at the shops specializing in collectible comics (and ComiX). I recall seeing my then-12 year old son sitting at a picnic table in Joshua Tree laughing his a$$ off over a "comic book," when I approached the table he attempted to hide it, thinking I wouldn't approve. When I simply commented "Oh, Zap! Got any Furry Freak Brothers there too?" he breathed a big sigh of relief, and said his Mother didn't really approve of such stuff.

I always loved "Fat Freddy's Cat!"

Always? Largo?

I believe this is the work of Kelly / Mouse, though the influence is unmistakeable.
Or maybe it is, Crumbby proxy?

"kickin asses is hard work"
Mr. Natural

and to tie the climbing into it I thought that Mr. Natural on the apron was about the cleanest crack i ever saw- like God split the rock and then walked away

I was reading that R. Crumb did some LSD and he said that for six months he lost his sense of his ego--He did not recommend this for others but in retrospect he felt it was a good thing for him- he said he came up with some of his most famous characters during this time.
