"Because we've been told for so long how special we are."
Yeah, I suppose that's part of the problem. History demonstrates pretty clearly, though, that civilizations that developed high standards of living eventually implode partly due to the lackadaisical attitudes of entitlement that tend to develop. Everybody just gets fatter and less motivated, and the whole thing goes to sh#t.
This is depressing. I'm gonna go get a latte.

A very thought provoking video. That said, I find it a bit odd how angry everyone gets at the prospect of divergent opinions.
Carry on.

Quick question:
How does school spending per pupil now compare to various past times, in real dollars?
Philo--once you figure out the answer, I expect you to apologize to Skipt, as you will understand that, whatever it is that plagues our schools, it's NOT a lack of funding.
(The funds may be spent on the wrong things--seems like school "administration" is a real cushy black hole of funding.)

That's the first (and only) Blah I agree with. But apologize to Skipt for pointing out his crap, dream on.

Welfare
Food Stamps
Unemployment for 99 weeks
CalWorks (California, I'm sure other states have other programs)
Student loans (the ones to for profits for worthless degrees/programs)
All of those things should be done away with immediately. Then our problems will be solved!

^^^^ That kinda sounds like Germany where, the last I checked, they're livin' large!
Oh, wait, I forgot they don't spend trillions on war.
They also don't have this: ( http://www.newsweek.com/2010/09/04/zakaria-why-america-overreacted-to-9-11.html )
Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. government has created or reconfigured at least 263 organizations to tackle some aspect of the war on terror. The amount of money spent on intelligence has risen by 250 percent, to $75 billion (and that’s the public number, which is a gross underestimate). That’s more than the rest of the world spends put together. Thirty-three new building complexes have been built for intelligence bureaucracies alone, occupying 17 million square feet—the equivalent of 22 U.S. Capitols or three Pentagons. Five miles southeast of the White House, the largest government site in 50 years is being built—at a cost of $3.4 billion—to house the largest bureaucracy after the Pentagon and the Department of Veterans Affairs: the Department of Homeland Security, which has a workforce of 230,000 people.

if parents worked with their children and with the teachers the literacy rates would increase
the teachers aren't going to be able to teach if they don't get support and help from the parents
I learned to read both at school and at home, and was encouraged at home to read beyond what I was required to do at school. I also was taught from my parents to respect my teachers without question. Any problems my parents had with my teachers they took up with the teachers without my knowledge, they always supported the teachers.
Particularly good teachers were often invited to my home for dinner and discussion.
It's not about the teachers, it's about the lack of respect that we have for learning and for teaching. That starts in the home.

Thank you Ed for succinctly stating the truth.

Fatty, Supply and demand dude. I'm sure something near and dear to your heart. Or would you rather they just hung out on unemployment?
Education and positively shaping society starts long before cosmotology school. Let's get the funding and energy behind grade schools going before pulling the plug on the duct tape programs of today.

Yeah Skip, blame it on teachers. It's fashionable.
School choice = private school paid for by public dollars. Here in CO, the schools of choice do not perform any higher than the large, public, comprehensive high schools, and in many measures they perform less well.
Blah, it is a combination of insufficient funding, along with a very inefficient system. If you really believe that the public school system is adequately funded, perhaps you should spend some time in one. More funding along with better management would go a long way towards improving a school system that takes anyone and everyone, and attempts to educate them.

It's tough making sure that my second grader is getting the best education that she can. We have to ask her at night about how her day was, stay informed on teacher communication about homework, work with her on the homework, and then make sure she takes it to school. We also have to read together, and do math problems together. Trying to teach her basic values that encourage her taking ownership of her education is also a must. But if my wife and I don't do it, WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO GET IT DONE??
As a teacher it amazes me how many parents have never figured this out.

No one likes us,
Don't know why.
May not be perfect,
But heaven knows we try,
But all around, even our old friends put us down.
Let's drop the big one, and see what happens!
We give them money, but are they grateful?
No! they're spiteful and they're hateful.
They don't respect us, so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one, and pulverise them
Asia's crowded, Europe's too old,
Africa's far too hot and Canada's too cold,
South America stole our name!
Let's drop the big one,
There'll be no one left to blame us
(We'll save Australia --
Don't want to hurt no kangaroo.
We'll build an all-American amusement park there.
They've got surfing, too!)
Boom goes London! Boom Paree!
More room for you and more room for me,
And every city, the whole world round,
Will just be another American town.
Oh how peaceful it'll be --
We'l;l set everybody free!
There'll be a Japanese komono, baby, Italian shoes for me.
They all hate us anyhow.
Let's drop the big one now.
Let's drop the big one now.
