Crimpergirl:
The best advice I have is to sign up for Netflix. The instant viewing is a life saver when you are forced on the couch.

She's right, do that if ya haven't already. Think of it as an experiment to see how low your movie-watching standards will go, when so many C-movies are free.

Facebook, too, there's another fine time-structuring activity!

Tough breaks, man, we're thinkin' of ya.

you've got all the shucks i can muster cowpoke. if it's any consolation, when my doc walked in the the x-rays he said if you're going to brake a bone you picked the right one. i counted about six pieces of clavicle, and with good care, your little bundle of joy
will grow up as big and strong as mine. just figure on sleeping on side b for a while.

Ha! So true Chiloe! I watched some real dogs...but I also stumbled on some really excellent movies (e.g., Everything is Illuminated). I can't imagine what I would have done with myself without Netflix - perhaps consumed a lot more pain killer out of sheer boredom?

hey all,
thanks so very much for the kind wishes, encouragement, and advise.

A few answers to questions:

where: mean streets of Boston (Cambridge, technically)...which also answers the NH question = whitehorse would be the right slabbin' area, but see below.

car or truck: small sedan, I think...mostly just remember the color = red.

details of accident: I was in the bike lane (i.e., in Boston, bike lane = 2ft wide street gutter with picture of bike painted on it). The driver, apparently not seeing me, made a left turn across traffic (i.e., me and cars in the car lane) to enter side street. I saw a blur of red and then was broadsiding her. Pretty much hit the car and bounced back to the ground -- didn't flip over the car, which is why the road rash is pretty minor. EMT/police, who were there in less than 5 minutes, said I broke her window out and dented the car pretty good (other than a sea of faces I didn't see much...was busy spittin' blood from slice through upper lip created by teeth...by the way, there were two kickass smart bystanders on the scene immediately who kept me from trying to move, kept the riffraff away from scene, and called 911...gotta pay that forward).

JimE, one of the first things I thought about was how this screwed up our plans. damn. I'll email in a couple weeks to see if we can figure something out...I'll still be good for the hiking and hangin' in beautiful family-fun spots...tie me off to a tree with a gri-gri and I can be the girls' belay slave.

fingers ok, despite shoulder? so hit the slabs: actually, not really = left hand is swollen. I can't make a fist and left forearm has that weird just woke up tingly feeling...doc says it's due to the two breaks at either end of my left collarbone. even slabs will have to wait a bit, but the rest of my body is so sore I can hardly get off the couch anywho...Warren Harding, Doug Scott or any other hardass hero, I am not! I'm taking Crimpergirl and Chiloe's tic list advice as my new fall goal.

one "funny" story: as I'm lying with neck brace digging into my very ouchy shoulder (had to do the head-n-neck prevent and ct scans), a nurse leans over me with one of those hospital wrist bands in my face, saying "did I spell your name correctly?" it was hard to tell though, cause the band had some other patients name on it!! was like a horror movie where they give you the wrong "procedure."

wait, one more tidbit: doc says "you cambridge bikers keep me in business." two minutes later, biker comes in er with nasty road rash on his chin...

Ghost: loved hearing your healing quick experience...very encouraging and my doc was doing the same thing, because one of the breaks is near the shoulder and the other near the sternum, which is apparently a rare combo. maybe our docs can trade x-rays/ct scans.

AND: you're right bmacd = I'll be thinking of you today -- sending you good doctoring and recovery wishes.

again, to all of ya: SUPERTHANKS!

(whew, back to the couch)

Bummer, I commute regularly on my bike and have had some close calls. I know it is a matter of when not if I will have the same fortune. Yesterday, I about took out bus pax who got off between stops and stepped right into the bike lane in front of me. Both the bus driver and pax would have been at fault had I creamed them.

cowpoke,

I told Maxine about your accident. She was very concerned and hopes you're going to be ok. She said she knows all about broken collar bones because her friend, Leah, told her all about it when she broke hers falling off her swing set. She says Leah cried a lot and you probably did, too. I said you probably didn't start crying until you realized you wouldn't be able to climb for the rest of the year. She said that would make her cry, too.
