There really is some fascinating research on how our brains learn especially as it applies to education that is out there these days.
Unfortunately so many schools are so restricted these days in how they deliver the curriclumum to students based in no small part on the public's perception of what schools should do and how they should do it.
Like everybody is an expert just because they went to school.
Interesting topics for sure.
Cheers,
DD

Maybe I was unclear, but i'd like to see this so kids want to go to school! I'd have shown up early if I was able to get my shred on before classes. Skaters unfortunately often drop out or buy into the whole dirtbag aspect. I'd like to see skating elevated to a level where the kids get respect, just like football, a sport that sucks out more dollars from high school budget than any other in this country. A sport by the way that has at least as much physical risk as skating. Schools should be attractive, too many kids are running away from it as it is.

Finding a way to tie math, physics and the "cool" stuff together may be the key for the future of our country. I want my kids to learn skating and climbing but it has not done much for me finacially. In 20 years all of the countries that do well educationally will be doing the cool stuff and our kids may be schlepping loads for them.

There's all sorts of applied physics and mathematics in skateboarding, and many sports - for a teacher willing to use it as a teachable thing. Though not every kid skates, either.

And not every kid plays football, or wants to be a cheerleader.

Excellent point. This is where the art of teaching comes in.
and;
"Though not every kid skates, either."
may be the case, but most kids will be more engaged if it's about skates rather than some other type example (see Tami's post above).
There are fine teachers that are doing these things, making the learning relevant to students' lives.
If they (the students) see the connections, it (whatever is being studied)
will have more meaning. The brain WANTS to learn. We just shouldn't get in the way but set up the opportunities which make it easier.

I think this is a shameless troll to show us some photo of how dad can do a board slide @ that crappy park north of SJ + how he bought his daughter the cheepist pads from kmart and let her ride his board on the flat sidewalk in front of his house. Now he want the taxpayers to pay for a mini ramp so he can go ride it on sat & sun.
Why dont you start volunteering to take all the skater kids out to the local skate park after school.
Dont think I didnt notice your good cali weather. do you know the term DYI.
cheers

I think back to when I was 12, I would have been stoked to go to school if I meant I got to skate before and after. And liability? It's the same as any other sport, how bout all the broken necks playing football?
Wonder: I'll take the cheap pad criticism. She's barely pushing around and those pads were given to us. Her birthday is coming up. She's getting a new set of pads, helmet and shoes. My birhdays comin up too, and I'm building my own ramp in our new backyard.

I just found a sweet skatepark on the way to Yosemite!
I've never been on a ramp or skatepark, but I used to ride a skateboard for my main transportation and still have that basic skill. I'll definitely upgrade my next trip report with a skateboard flailing section if the logistics support that endeavor. Heads up Bryce, you may have to charge it on my daughter's razor while I'm getting hurt on the skateboard. But someone needs to take pics too... hmmm.

TRUE STORY...
I am shopping in Mervyn's (Like a J,C.P.) and I found some $2 socks on sale for 1/2 off.
Me: Hi.
Cashier: Just the socks then?
Me: Yep. There on sale for 50% off!
Cashier: (Fumbling near the cash register.) Here it is. (Pulls out a calculator and sets it on the counter.)
Me: (Snatching calculator away.) You don't need that!
Cashier: I'm really bad at math.
Me: It's half of two! No one is that bad!
Cashier: So what is that? Like, one?
So... Yes, more math in school. We may not all need Avogadro's number every day nor the ability to factor the difference of perfect cubes or derive the unit circle but a SOLID UNDERSTANDING of math THROUGH algebra and basic trig never hurt anyone!

When I moved to Fairbanks, I was mildly surprised that they had a city funded, small skate/bike park just down the street from my place. I'd often stop by on the way back from roadbiking, and watch the kids pullin' tricks.
I thought it was a GREAT idea. Kept them in one place, encouraged helmet use, and enough adult folks around either skating themselves, or bringing their kids, that there were no fighting/drug/vandalism issues. Where I grew up, we just had to ride sidewalks, alleys, etc and were a danger to everyone on the sidewalk. I'm all for it.

I'll go for skate ramps but I also want climbing walls, and bouldering structures. I want pursuits for those like myself who hated team sports, no actually loathed them, but finally at 36 found climbing which now has been a thirty year passion. Why do schools not get it that not everyone wants to play with a ball of some diameter or shape, why not encourage those who think independent, they've the ones who sail around the world or climb K2 or bicycle to Patagonia, free thinkers who don't need a coach or a team. Anything that gets the young moving should be encouraged as the future health of so many of our young is worrisome, due to inactivity and obesity.

Skate ramps & trampolines that's the ticket. The kids will be so broken up before they get out of middle school us old folks will seem to be in great shape.
Math, history, science who needs that stuff.
War now we wouldn't want to neglect that.
Skate parks, trampolines & an M16 now that's the new school theme I want to see.
lol
