As he and I talked over possible objectives for broken-down climbers ...
Cob Rock? (groan)
... Tarbuster suggested a scheme of brilliant comfort.
Lisa and her friend Sherrie would train Saturday by running down and up Mt. Evans a few times.
If Tarbuster and I could manage to climb the mountain, we would find a car waiting for us on the summit.
I know a great plan when I hear one.

Sweet thread Chiloe!
Yes, I remember well the day you fellows were on Fantasy Ridge, and I was on...what the heck was it called, Pear Buttress?
And the picnic was a ball too.
I hope to see Roy soon, and maybe even you. Thanks for bringing us along!

As we started walking uphill, it became clear right away which one of us lives in Nederland.
And who lives on a couch down at sea level.

I know this pain, he is a total pain in the ass to hike to a route with. Roy sort of goes into mission drive. On a regular hike/ walk through the woods he is much more enjoyable.

Hiking up, we became aware that another party had reached the base of our chosen route, but was not moving quickly to climb it.
And there was a second party approaching below us, who appeared to be stepping up their pace.
The pincer predicament that defines modern climbing.
After one look at our pursuers, Tarbuster left his wheezing partner behind and dashed ahead to stake our claim to the next likely route.

By the time I arrived he had uncoiled a rope, taken out his ice axe, and kicked steps to the base of the rock.

Nice looking piece of stone!
BITD guiding together in the Meadows Roy came up with a set of Ninga (barbie-type) dolls to demonstrate to newcomers how the whole leading, anchors, following scene worked. We had a hilarious few days staging the situation - and then came the demo for a Go Climb A Rock class.
As I remember it was out on Pothole Dome. We jumped into our roles, the dolls performed perfectly (it was a bit like a puppet show) and .... Silence.
The whole class thought we were out-of-our-minds. They actually got a bit offended. We were dumbfounded. Crestfallen.
Oops!

Roy's threads full of his wonderful pictures of him and his pals walking the ridgetops always gives me inspiration to go walk around on the ridgetops myself.
Roy's another reason why SuperTopo is where it's at.

Had a fun evening with Roy on the 4th eating dinner and watching fireworks from his home in Nederland. He's a bit down, but still a wonderful conversationalist in spite of the fact that now it even hurts him to merely talk.

On the drive up that morning, well caffeinated and knowing of Roy's difficulties, I had grandly offered to hog all the leads.
But as I puffed to the base of the climb, it was obvious whose day this would be.
