Understood. I guess I'm just a little sensitive since I'm the one who has to deal with all of this.
My sincere apologies to the OP and everyone else if I've been an ass regarding this thread.
I just want to make sure we can keep the pit open and available so folks have options for camping and hanging for the season that don't involve pissing the Park service off.
Again, sorry if I was an as#@&%e. Not my intentions.
Maybe I need to go back to being a "silent" voice of the community.

Yes, thanks Robert. I deleted my post because I realized it was not my place to make any calls or announcements on this. Glad you spoke up here.

I find this unsetteling, as I don't own a van or a gun. So when I have slept at the pit, it was on the ground without a sidearm. I sort of cringe to think what might have happened to someone in that situation had people like that rolled in, could have been really ugly, no?
One of these things might have to change... it probably won't be the gun... although for people like that.......

I once pointed a 9mm at a mans head and told them to get the f*#k lost.
I have no doubt if his attempted murder of me and rape of my girlfriend continued he would be dead now.
Probally would have saved others.

The truth about the pit is the surrounding 'hood' is pretty ghetto. All in all, we have only had a few problems there with the scumbags.
People just need to be careful when camping. Don't leave tents and gear behind while you're out for the day, pack everything up and take it with you. There really isn't much I can do about it unfortunately. We really don't want the sheriff down there nosing around since you technically can't camp in a residential area.
I'll be sure to make more drive by's and keep an eye on things as much as possible.

Hi Robert
......as a side note to this. Apperantly there is a website about the pit. And somewhere on that website my e-mail address lives. I'm getting requests for reservations......monthly, in season, and have for five years now. I keep refering them to you via Hilde at Nomad. The thought of enterprise has passes through my mind..............but?
Could you please remove that e-mail address?
Say hi to Hilde

The U.S. National Park Service is to blame.....
there were MORE camping sites when it was a little known monument...
I wonder when they are going to make a official, "campground full" sign, instead of the little paper one they have posted year round in the booth.
Gerrrrrr......my pet peve...

The pit is a free place to park and camp.
It is not a secure place. Camp there if you are willing to accept the risk.
Do not bring guns to the pit.

Guyman's right.
NPS has poured millions of dollars into paving over the Monument, yet NOT ONE new campsite has been added in at least thirty years that I know of.

Spot on. The is often a misconception people seem to have. That road was payed for by federal hiway funds.

"When seconds count--the police are just minutes away." That's why I always pack some heat in remote areas.
rlf: most people who DO pack do it in a very discreet manner. Not waving the thing around in public.

Damn TWACKERZ!
Norwegian~ I'm glad you got to take a climbing trip to Josh, sorry this happeneed.
Looking forward to a proper trip report.
I've never been to the Pit, but a few weeks ago when EVERY SINGLE SITE in the entire park was full, I would have gladly taken my chances there. Scrubbed it and bailed instead.
GUY~ there was a proper "campgrounds full" sign at the gate, and everywhere
else.
TWACKERZ suck!

Actually the number of available campsites has been reduced. Several sites in HVCC were deleted during renovation, and the rarely used horse area in Ryan took a number of sites out of general use.

RJ-
You forgot option C) Don't go there at all.
By avoiding the pit altogether you can avoid your Option A and comply with the wishes of the owner/manager of the property. No one is forcing you to go there.

Add the asinine "two vehicles per site" rule - which applies to all sites, even those with ample space to park three or more vehicles - and you'll get groups that would be happy camping in one site instead having to ocupy several sites just so they can park their cars legally. This lowers the number of folks who can camp in the Monument for no good reason.
I don't mind paying the extra ten bucks a night for an additional site, and I can stake out (and pay for) as many sites as we need as early as I have to because of my flexible schedule, but somebody rolling in after work on Friday will be shut out when they otherwise wouldn't have to be.
