Ohh, and by the way LEB, I don't really mind you being around so much. I could get by without you, but I just pass over your stuff noww that doesn't interest me. And you are right about health care...

this place needs gals like you and such here...
it helps folks get well, and it helps others grow, while they watch the fruits of care, take hold and grow, and spraed to other hearts, giveing out even MORE life and love to many....

it is just a weeding out process, we do not want to climb with girls, we depend on the belayer to be a woman who spits tabaccy and swears like a sailor.
see, if there is a body in the brush, they might have to carry it out, so we need the buffed out hard core types that swear more than we do when there in the beauty parlor gettin a bee hive perm while reading sports illustrated and chewing gum. got it?

the ladies are gettin a little soft these days,
most of the women i remember from the sixties smoked pall malls and drank old fashions or barcardis all night. then they would drive us kids home, completely dui, i mean were talkin about blowin a .12 before the start the car, no seat belts, a stumblin in the door, they just don't make em like that anymore.

Pate:
> Climbing is a men's club and always has been. Men have always
> outnumbered women and always will.
true on the former, but it's the "and always will" part that gave me pause. are you so sure about that part?
my pal's 19 year old daughter (my god-daughter, yeah, me - the atheist) hasn't wiffed on a .12 or WI5 in a couple years now. perhaps she's a mutant, but i suspect not. she's 5'2" and weighs at most 105bs. and she has more than once made me look old and foolish. whether you could keep up with her is for you to contemplate.
~~~
but more to the point, do you really want the "and always will" part of your post to prove true? do you want a men's club, or a climber's club?
just askin'
^,,^
(pisser that LEB pushed in a post while i was typing my first -- as i took pride in never having posted on the same thread as LEB. guess i need to find a new yardstick. sheesh...)
Flouride-
What coz said. sometimes this place seems like a high school locker room, but that is the chaff talking, not the wheat.
don't let the a**holes drive you away. you have to have a thick skin here, of that there is no doubt. there are people here that don't play nice; pretty much like life. but they are outweighed by people that care. just gotta give the negatives a pass and move on to the good.
my first post on the Taco got positive response from Tar, Jello and several other taconers. i was amazed that such legends would even pay me the time of day. theres good people here that care and support; don't let the jerks get to you.
Or a sauslagfest?
Now everyone will dogpile me for inflicting horrible puns on the world of SuperTopo.
OK, nothing to add to what's already been said. I enjoy the contributions of most (except most of those from she who must not be named), wish people could be more civil, and get tired of ranting to do with political, social, and religious matters. Intelligent and polite discussion regarding the latter topics is tolerable, if clearly identified as such. Hopefully as we approach the equinox and beyond, we'll see more climbing stuff.
my species have already filed a class action suit for the "dogpile" part.
but i haven't signed on, nor will i. for your posts absolutely tower, at least in these parts.
though don't slight the dogpile until you've actually tried one. (la woof!)
Thankfully this place isn't as bad as the hot springs.
Many a time I and the other sausages have cooked ourselves until shriveled, waiting and hoping that the next vehicle will deliver an order of good eggs, but alas it seemed to always be another package of gassy jimmy deans.
Wanda-
Thanks! I was interested to see that no one thought to mention me as a woman in all their lists up above. In fact several people have referred to me as "he" in the past and been corrected. Perhaps the result of working all my life in another old boy's club -academia- so that I sound male most of the time.
You're welcome Jan.
I too have been mistaken for the opposite gender because of the feminine sounding avatar I adopted, but I have attempted to rectify that with the intensely masculine image above my name.
Can't take any of this stuff too seriously it's a forum for god's sake, open to opinion and critique.
So what if there's a bunch of guys writing currently, that too will change.
Calling threads "a sausagfest", holy cow, you've just reeled yourself right into the frying pan!
Let it go.
Beth, most of the outdoor sports I'm into are sausagfests, the ratio of men to women is overwhelming. It is what it is.....
Some of us here in Topoland just need to post up more, me included, but truthfully a lot the threads do not hold much interest for me, especially the political or religious ones (do like the goofy/drama ones though). I'd post up some climbing TR's but its ski season for me and I am sparing you all and not doing so.
I hope not, but if it is I hope it's because people are climbing too much to be interested in much of what is discussed here.... male and female people both.
I have enjoyed meeting many people in real life through the climbing connection here, both in climbing and in non-climbing situations. The really unfortunate aspect of avatars as identities and hastily written thoughts are that there are few personal consequences to being an as#@&%e... and so easy to write something thoughtlessly that makes it apparent.
In a social situation in "3-D" (as happie says) there are a large number of civil conventions that have been learned over literally millions of years of social interaction. Perhaps it is liberating to shed those conventions and let it all hang out in the Forum. The only real consequence is that people stop participating.
I know quite a few of you, and I've enjoyed sharing time out climbing, or in climbing situations... and I value the fact that I can reach you through the STForum. It would be a bummer if the place lost that particular aspect of interacting.
My experience with web stuff also is that you cannot assume it will last forever, or even very long. We all act like this has been happening since the invention of the written word, but actually it's all happened relatively recently. STForum was a special place because of the people who posted to it... it still has some of that magic.
Topics get raised that people feel passionate about, both climbing topics and non-climbing topics. Perhaps not so oddly the urge to utilize ad hominem arguments instead of agreeing that someone else might have a legitimate point wins out. When pushed to that sort of argument, the arguer will use anything to discredit their opponent, including gender stereotypes... it's all so sad, but perfectly understandable.
Anyway, the tone of the discussions has changed, the frequency of non-climbing threads has gone up, and I don't know if it will change since it is harder and harder to justify doing the work to share an adventure when you know that most of the energy people put into posting here is not to share their excellent adventure but to explain for the nth time why someone else is "corrupt and dishonest" or "completely wrong." Politics can be an adventure too, but by-and-large the politics engaged in here is analogous to the worst arm-chair mountaineering drivel that could be imagined, and certainly not tolerable if written in the same manner, but about climbing.
This is intended to be a "Climber's Forum," which is not to say it is only to be about climbing, but it would be great if there were actually climbers posting, and that sometime this posting was related to climbing... which can cover a broad range of interests, indeed.
As Richard said, I can have many conversations on many of these same topics with people who are not climbers, the frequency with which I can have a conversation with climbers, and some very accomplished ones, here on SuperTopo is unlike anything else I have experienced. It would be a great loss to me not to have that opportunity. An regrettable if it was because the tone of the Forum made it uninteresting to other climbers.
I think Nita did a good enough job of it. I'd say the percentage of females posting here is equivalent to real life. Sure, it'd be cool if there were more, but I think that there is more to someone's identity. Domingo I seem to remember from way back saying she was indeed a 'she,' but in many of her very interesting and topical posts and discussions it doesn't come up. Just like how on many discussions or posts the fact that I am white doesn't come up, or someones Age.
Relax and let identity be defined by your actions and the things you say. Maybe not have so many threads trying to bring things down around you, try to bring people up instead.
Which reminds me of winning the men's open category in the only climbing comp I ever entered. Didn't matter that I would have won even if I'd fallen from the first hold, cuz I was the only man present. It was in a friend's home gym. Most of the 25 or so women there would have beaten me easily if it had been a true open comp, but I wasn't gonna complain.
