Never saw an Arrow packframe. Any recollection of where it might have been made?

Joe should be coming to the gathering in celebration of the second ascent of the Nose so you can ask him directly about his Folly.
The Austin Post shot Scuffy just mentioned. Damn! Look at all that stone!

Steve: I SO appreciate all of your historical and other threads and am amazed at what you keep posting. All of us here owe you many thanks for all that you post, your topics/content AND your insights.
Guido: My dad had a Trapper Nelson. I'm glad I never had to carry it anywhere, having grown up in the Kelty age...

PIlgrims, Steve G. is actually a builder now many years, but his real interest in recent years is our history, no surprise. He is passionate, thorough and tireless and wants to take his climbing history interests to an organizational level actually and is building a major collection, clearly.

The Trapper Nelson, in all its glory. (Prospector not included.)
Canvas sack, wood (hickory?) frame, unpadded straps, no hip belt. They were still around when I started scouting, and I used them a fair amount for hiking and snowshoeing, and later when working in geology. The REI Cruiser appeared soon after, and was considered the sine qua non of backpacks.
I heard that the first descent of Fitschen's Folly preceded the first ascent, making it rather unusual.

To Scuffy and his request for the story from Joe Fitschen about Fitschen's Folly I recommend buying the DVD of the Tahquitz Reunion that took place in November of 2009 where Joe tells the story of how it all happened. After the fall and his injuries, Royal went to the hospital and visited him. the beginning of a long and lovely friendship.
You may purchase one at the Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum - 54470 North Circle Drive, Idyllwild - (where the History of Climbing Exhibit is still in place) for $21.50 (tax included).
Or send a check or money order for $24.75 (including shipping and handling) to IAHS at PO Box 3320, Idyllwild, CA 92549.

Great read - Joe is an amazingly under-stated but succinct writer.
Was his book on Yosemite and beyond ever published?

Joe's book was published a while ago.
It is his usual excellent writing and can be bought from him directly.
PM Oldguy and he will give you the details.
