Guido: My dad had a Trapper Nelson. I'm glad I never had to carry it anywhere, having grown up in the Kelty age...

PIlgrims, Steve G. is actually a builder now many years, but his real interest in recent years is our history, no surprise. He is passionate, thorough and tireless and wants to take his climbing history interests to an organizational level actually and is building a major collection, clearly.

Canvas sack, wood (hickory?) frame, unpadded straps, no hip belt. They were still around when I started scouting, and I used them a fair amount for hiking and snowshoeing, and later when working in geology. The REI Cruiser appeared soon after, and was considered the sine qua non of backpacks.
I heard that the first descent of Fitschen's Folly preceded the first ascent, making it rather unusual.

To Scuffy and his request for the story from Joe Fitschen about Fitschen's Folly I recommend buying the DVD of the Tahquitz Reunion that took place in November of 2009 where Joe tells the story of how it all happened. After the fall and his injuries, Royal went to the hospital and visited him. the beginning of a long and lovely friendship.
You may purchase one at the Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum - 54470 North Circle Drive, Idyllwild - (where the History of Climbing Exhibit is still in place) for $21.50 (tax included).

Great read - Joe is an amazingly under-stated but succinct writer.
