Injured hiker dies in Sierra while awaiting help

FRESNO, Calif.—Authorities say a 36-year-old woman who was injured while rock climbing in the eastern Sierra died before rescuers could get to her.
The woman was climbing Obelisk Mountain in the John Muir Wilderness with two friends when she fell Sunday. One friend stayed with her, while the other went for help.
Fresno County sheriff's officials received the call at 8 p.m. and launched the search at daybreak. Officials say the climbers weren't equipped for the cold weather overnight.
A California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the pair early Monday morning, but couldn't get to them because of the rugged terrain. Sheriff's officials had to send a ground team to hike nearly seven hours.
The team is now working to recover the body and help the friend off the mountain.
The woman's name has not been released.

It's confirmed. The county coroner's office confirmed who it is. I'm so sorry to hear it. She was a sweetheart. The little bit of information I could stand to hear about it, of the little information that was given, sounds like a freak accident. I'm not going to be the bearer of details. Just ask that whoever posts please hold back negative judgmental commentary. If you knew her, you would have only held her in high regard, too. Deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Just a little more. I have known some sweet people in my day,
and she is at the top of my list. So many interactions, so many
times she saw humor, knew how to act, always gentle, never an
unkind word, always a rock-steady climbing partner. Goodbyes
seem to never get easier, and seeing her smiling face right
now is hard. I will never forget you.

She was planning on joining us in Jtree for Tx this year, and was counted in the number I relayed on Lynne's thread. She was a fan of Spiderman, Cherry Bomb, and some others. Those who have grunted their way through the final OW section of that 10A in Conan's Corridor can imagine my mid-life angst at seeing her lithe frame float up it like it wasn't even there. Oh, and I never understood Japanese Plum wine until she handed me a swig on a late eve at the foot of the Water Cracks in TM. Those who knew her, come find us. We will at least do a climb in her honor.
