In terms of this guy taking the "nutball" way out of deployment, that hardly seems a viable motivation since joining the service during wartime...usually means going to war, or at least that it is quite likely you will go. This was not just a mishandling of the stress of deployment.

That would be like taking a job as a climbing guide and then freaking out at the cliff because you can't bear to leave the ground.

Reports say this terrorist shot more than
100 rounds before the cop plugged him!

Gun was a FN5.7 reportedly.

If only they would let soldiers carry weapons all of this could have been avoided!!!

It's starting to look like this shooting has a lot in common with the columbine shooting...

That is, somebody who felt dissed by the culture around him lost his marbles and decided to make everybody pay.

Peace

Watch for info regarding what kind of psychopharmaceuticals the shrink had in his system. Columbine, Virginia Tech, and most of the other shockers involve SSRI antidepressants in particular. Quite a few psychiatrists self-medicate these drugs. I've worked on antidepressant-suicide and violence (murder) cases for over a decade. The military hands out the stuff like candy and they wonder why the suicide problem has jumped.

Doctors who are majors have cracked before... remember Frank Burns in the movie MASH, but then, Hawkeye provoked him:

Hawkeye Pierce: Morning, Frank. Heard from your wife? A bunch of the boys asked me to, uh, ask you, Frank, what Hot Lips was like in the sack. You know, was she...
Frank Burns: Mind your own business.
Hawkeye Pierce: No Frank, you know, is she better than self-abuse? Does that- does that big ass of hers move around a lot, Frank or does it sort of lie there flaccid? What would you say about that?
Duke Forrest: What's Going on over there, is he getting pointers or something?
Trapper John: Oh no, Hawkeye's trying to get him on an appearance tour.
Duke Forrest: Ohhhh, is that a fact?
Hawkeye Pierce: Would you say that she was a moaner, Frank? Seriously Frank. I mean, does she go "ooooh" or does she lie there quiet and not do anything at all?
Frank Burns: Keep your filthy mouth to yourself.
Hawkeye Pierce: Or does she go "uh-uh-uh"?
Frank Burns: [Frank leaps over the table and attacks Hawkeye]
Hawkeye Pierce: Get him off me! I've got glasses. Get him off me!
Duke Forrest: What's going on, Frank? That lesson one?
Hawkeye Pierce: Frank Burns has gone nuts! I'm wearing glasses, for God's sake.
Trapper John: Watch out for your goodies, Hawkeye. That man is a sex maniac; I don't think Hot Lips satisfied him. Don't let him kiss you, Hawkeye.

But all kidding aside, and I am not trying to make light of the situation, my condolences to the families of those affected by this sad and tragic incident. My nephew and godson is due for deployment with his Marine company to Afghanistan this spring, and something like this must be very disturbing for the troops.

Radical,
I don't see what the NRA has to do with this.
He used his doctor's privilege to smuggle a gun on base.

If anything it shows how vulnerable people are when you take their guns away.
I heard one ill informed politician say that with so many rounds fired that there must have been friendly fire. I doubt it.
With a 9mm and a pocket of clips I can easily crank out a hundred shots in under a minute, but it is "spray and pray" not aimed fire.

Well rather than read the actual new reports i went straight to the taco to find out what happened. Don't see how you could rule out his religion in this case.. remember the guy who fragged his platoon @ the start of desert freedom in 101st. That was annother muslim with a serious conflict of interests...

Ron, please don't go crazy!

Howdy Tradman, how is everything in the Green Mts.?

Very tragic, condolences to all who lost loved ones and those who must be traumatized by this...

Seconding the comment above about the military health system overly using psycho-pharmaceuticals. The last two summers we have run a summer camp for children of deployed personnel from Beale AFB. Great program, great kids, but really shocking how high a percentage of the kids are on such medication. It is stressful to be a child with a daddy or mommy serving overseas, so big pharma gets some big sales...

Must be a better way.

I'm still trying (without any success) to find the story behind Joe Medicine Crow earning the Congressional Medal Of Honor.

Most of those are awarded posthumously.

thanks 426; It always saddens me when otherwise (seemingly) intelligent people refuse to look at context.

And by the way, if a Christian sniper pops off a bunch of kids in a school yard, is he a "terrorist", or a mad man and a murderer? I guess in some peoples eyes Muslim = terrorist; no middle ground.

And by the way, 911 was an inside job. Don't forget it. ;)

I think you miss my point Sully,
I don't consider Muslims sacred cows. But I would like people to use their language a little more carefully. Terrorism generally is a premeditated attack on civilians used as a means to coerce (through widespread terror) a change in policy of a superior power that can not be confronted in another way. Of course the whole story isn't out yet, but I haven't heard of any policy demands put out by this guy, nor of any premeditation. To my mind he is a mad man and a murderer, but not a "terrorist".

Here is some of what wiki has to say about the use of the word "terrorism"

The word "terrorism" is politically and emotionally charged,[5] and this greatly compounds the difficulty of providing a precise definition. . . . The concept of terrorism is itself controversial because it is often used by states to delegitimize political or foreign opponents, and potentially legitimize the state's own use of terror against them.

"HE waS A MUSLIM TRAINED IN THE US,, just like the pilots of 911.....Just a new tactic is all"

He is nothing like the pilots who were trained here. They were sent here. All reports are showing that He was born here from good parents. This wasn't some mass futuristic conspiracy created 50 years ago so that this nutjob could be born here. The police are finding no links to him and any terrorist group. So far all reports are pointing to him being a conflicted human who cracked. War can do that to you.

The suspect is alert and talking. Let's see what he has to say.I'm sure Texas will be very lenient on him.

It's sad when attacking a military target still get someone labeled as a terrorist. Doesn't anyone even know what that word means? Attacking civilians for the sole purpose of spreading fear, as opposed to reducing the number of enemy soldiers in battle or destroying critical supply routes, etc..., is what makes someone a terrorist.

So let's wait until his intent is discovered before deciding if he is a terrorist, murderer, or soldier fighting a war against enemy soldiers.

You guys that label anyone fighting against the US as terrorists are idiots.

Fatty, give it a rest. Both in jumping to conclusions as to the man's motivations, however 'obvious' they may seem to you, and suggesting that this be handled extra-judicially. Assuming that he lives and is mentally fit to stand trial - not a foregone conclusion - we'll learn more about this then. Yes, it seems quite likely that if he isn't found insane, he'll be convicted and sentenced to death - which, if he is a devout Muslim, he might welcome as martyrdom. Let's not go beyond that, and don't forget that the Oklahoma City bombing was initially blamed on 'terrorists'.

Bearing in mind that just because something may seem terrifying, or intended to make a political statement, it isn't necessarily terrorism. There are several mass murders in the US each year, but terrorism is rarely a factor.
