I heard...2006 & 2008 the democrats won big.

...The Democratic Party won a majority of the state governorships[ and the U.S. House and Senate seats each for the first time since 1994, an election-year commonly known as the "Republican Revolution." For the first time in the history of the United States, no Republican captured any House, Senate, or Gubernatorial seat previously held by a Democrat.

Democrats took a 233–202 advantage in the House of Representatives, and achieved a 49–49 tie in the United States Senate. The Senate figure is sometimes quoted in the media as 51-49, which includes two members who ran as independent candidates: Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman, who promised to caucus with the Democrats. The final Senate result was decided when Democrat James Webb was declared the winner in Virginia against incumbent George Allen, as reported by the Associated Press. On November 9, 2006, Allen and fellow Republican incumbent Sen. Conrad Burns (Mont.) both conceded defeat, ceding effective control of the Senate to the Democrats.

The democrats won big in 2006 & 2008...your minority party didn't listen. They just obstructed...we can do the same.

You still don't control the senate...so what do you think is going happen...ask you son, with the 190 IQ?

Why, just another regular American.

Well read, informed, capable of superb critical thinking.

And most importantly, votes Republican "religiously".

And, "racism" has got nothing to do with voting Republican.

Just another good old boy doing what comes naturally.

JE wrote: The single biggest factor in employment has always been corporate profits. When they rise, employment rises. When they fall, employment falls.

Maybe 40 years ago. How do you explain the huge profits, the growth of wealth to the upper two percent and the decline of benefits and wages to the average workers?

The relationship remains valid today. Quite frankly, when I got my undergraduate math/econ degree from Berkeley, I was an orthodox liberal economist, thinking corporations were the dangerous enemy. After I started working as an economic forecaster, the strong, persistent and clear link between corporate profitability and employment was so striking it forced me to change my thinking.

There are certain economic statistics that consistently lead, are coincident with, or lag other economic statistics. Corporate profits have been a stable leading indicator of employment for fairly obvious reasons. When profits rise, businesses expand, and when profits decline, businesses contract.

The current record nominal profits will lead to an economic expansion -- unless the government does something to make expansion less profitable, or more uncertain. Sad to say, I have little faith that a Republican House, Democratic Senate, and Democratic President will result in pro-expansive, or even neutral conditions for business. I fear that each group, and particularly my Republicans, will spend more time posturing and less time doing. The Democrats and Republicans are so caught up in their partisanship, they won't react to the danger, but the independents will.

Your comments on the top two percent Bob, have no relevance to corporate profits. The statistics on the percentages of wealth and income refer to individuals only. You also overlook absolutes: If everyone's income rises, but those at the top rise faster, it does not contradict the relationship between profits and employment. Profits rise, and employment rises.

I know, Gary, you see it differently. The rise in the stock market under Reagan also led (again, meaning occurred before) a rise in general economic activity, including employment. The stock market, by the way, is also a leading indicator, although I've found it a less reliable one.

John E,
Thanks for another succinct and balanced post.
Be assured that your efforts are not entirely wasted or unappreciated.

On a side note I am giving thanks this year for the enlightenment this thread
has brought to me into how the mind of Robespierre probably functioned.

Too funny, Reilly! And we shouldn't overlook the fact that he, too, was a lawyer!
