Here's the itinerary that'll be handed out at the Practice/Entrance Boulders starting at 0700 Friday and Saturday morning. The times are just a guideline that I came up with so as to be able to leave and have time to make it to the post climb activities. What you want to do is up to you...

Dont look at me like that

Sorry I havent replied, I havent had time lately to be online. I will be honest with you gary, Im a happily married man and in fact March 20th will be my 28th anniversary. I am also pretty old fashioned in that I dont think I even have any naked pics of myself, but dont be disappointed, if you saw any you would almost certainly wish you hadnt.

It takes alot of guts to come to terms with ones sexuality in such a public forum, especially in light of the stigma wrongly attached to alternative lifestyles. From what Ive read, repressed sexuality takes a terrible toll on the psyche, so keep up the good fight.

Hopefully the day will come when tolerance and understanding triumph over the hate and fear that unjust social proscriptions generate, and i think you have helped to bring such a day a little bit closer.

If I can be of any help on a platonic level, you have my number.

Mt. Woodson Is a Top Spot for Bouldering
March 26, 1992|DAVID SHAUGHNESSY

Bouldering is a popular variety of rock climbing, and North County is the home of one of the finest bouldering sites in the state. A prominent ridge studded with thousands of huge boulders, Mt. Woodson is northeast of Poway off California 67.

Parking is on the shoulder of 67, and climbers walk a quarter mile or so on Mt. Woodson Road to get to the boulders, which cover the entire point. "It's like someone spilled a bag of giant marbles," said Brian McInerny, a longtime climber who took his first rock-climbing class there in 1972.

Climbers first come across two relatively small practice boulders, which are but 8 or 10 feet high. Climbers can warm up on the smaller boulders or practice certain techniques that they will need when they tackle the larger ones, which rise out of the ground like towers, many more than 30 feet tall.

Two of the largest, most popular boulders are known, in fact, as Tower No. 1 and Tower No. 2, and others have names like Mother Superior, the Cave, Ogre and Marshmallow Tower.

There is even a pocket handbook called Mt. Woodson Bouldering, which has locations, difficulty ratings and descriptions of most of the routes that climbers attempt on each of the boulders.

The routes are usually barely noticeable, with only the remnants of chalk dust, or some fixed bolts for the climbers to tie into to mark them. Routes may be based on the smallest of cracks, or the scantiest of footholds.

"Mt. Woodson is a Mecca for all Southern California climbers," said Tim Johnson, a Navy flight officer who lives in Ramona. "It has every type of crack climbing and face climbing. It ranges from easy problems to the most difficult you can imagine."

On larger rocks, where there's a chance of a fall, climbers employ a technique called belaying, using ropes and carabiners (metal loops) to anchor themselves against a fall.

"You can always challenge yourself at Mt. Woodson," said McInerny. "There will always be something harder to do."

Gotta love this one, lol...

"Rumors that Piggot, unhappy about the initial construction of the microwave antenna farm on the summit, released rattlesnakes on top which he had captured elsewhere are probably just that: rumors."

A vintage story taken from Premium Miniatures
By Bob Van Belle

"Climbers began visiting Woodson long ago, but the early days of the 1960's are
shrouded in the mists of prehistory. One story involves Royal Robbins. It seems he
was being given a tour of the hill by the resident hardmen of the day. Spotting an
obvious 25-foot hand crack, Robbins made a discreet inquiry and was told that yes,
the crack was indeed a fine aid climb; not surprisingly, he made short work out of
it. The Robbins Crack (5.10a) is now one of Woodson's truly classic lines and the
outstanding climb of the period."

Man, just checked out the thread again. Looks like the Reunion's going to be a major event. Really wish I could make - I miss the good old days of soloing at Woodson.

And not to split hairs, but those old photos of Jaws and Driving South were indeed of me, and I just found an earlier Eppi shot in the sequence:

But at least I've found a Woodson substitute - Northumberland. This shot's from last summer. Got a new chalkbag and some trendier shorts, but still haven't cut my hair.

Anyway, cheers, and keep on climbin' all you good people.
