Not a firefighter. That's my friend Dave Hardenberger. He races ski's and is a captain at La Mesa fire. We practice at fiesta Island once or twice during the week from 4pm until dark starting next week. Since we are all licensed racers, the city allows us our own practice area and we can set up a track and train. The 10 time world champion grew up in El Cajon.

EDIT: Gary I'm not in that picture. I was at home with a broken leg for that race. hahaha stupid motorcycle!

Hi Elke, good to hear from you again too. And glad that you and Tom are still climbing.

Enjoy the reunion. I'll probably be doing ice climbs on Ben Nevis that weekend...

Cheers,
Paul

Having been e-mailed about the shindig a week ago,I spent the last week reading all the replies.Woodson has really stuck in the souls of so many, myself included. The history of the caretakers of Woodson is an interesting read.Seems to me the 70's and early 80's really were the people that built the character of Woodson.I started climbing at Woodson in the late 80's and one thing I remember at the beginning 20 yrs later was Donny Bedford and Dan Haugelstine showing me and my brother the climbs and Donny doing the climb I think was called go with the flow and a dyno with both hands coming off and the sound of his hands sticking a scoop.I remember thinking to myself wow that was cool how the hell'd he do that. Then one reply mentioned not moving rocks at the bottom of landings to avoid falling on them:that is Mt Woodson and its persona and its good to see some don't let that be forgotten. And the video of the guys on right longs crack was great.Ours guys were all there, high hopes and getting 5 ft up and upside down feet wedged in and going nowhere on it!The climbing at Woodson translated so well to other climbing areas no matter the type, especially when your base beginnings started at Woodson.Woodson was like surfing a break in front of your house maybe was not the best wave but you were out there with your buds and had it all to yourself and 20 some yrs later are some of the best memories of my life. Not in contact with the guys I climbed with in the late 80's and 90's I still think of them in the fondest way.Thats what Woodson brought to people a real lifelong kinship in the soul.Once a climber always a climber for me whether I'm climbing or not.The king of Woodson no question(not even close):Rick. Have fun be careful. Thanks to the guys that keep Woodson's character true. Chris Knuth

so true. only i'd add it is one of the best breaks out there. if woodson's boulders were laid out on a flat wooded meadow instead of that hellacious uphill chaparral thicket, with nice on-site camping, it'd see as much traffic as josh or hueco or bishop. the bouldering there is absolutely stellar, but most of today's boulderers don't wanna deal with all that hiking.

That's what made us hardcore Woodson men, that darn hike up the hill lugging all our hardware and ropes with us! I use to combine roadbiking with swimming (50) laps in a (25) meter pool with/without fins on my hands and the same with floats between my knees along with that darn hike! No wonder I could do what I could back then! That hike is what probably keeps Woodson as pristine as it is today, thank God!

From "Painter's Pants, Ever Climb in Them?" post:

mooser: Most definitely (that's me in the middle). I even took my wife on our first date in painter's pants (to Woodson).

I remember hearing about Chris K. soloing Uncertainty Principle back in the day...still makes me pucker. I think we hooked him up with rock boots back when i was at FiveTen but i don't recall if his solo was before or after. Anyone (i.e. Rick P.) ever repeat that feat? Plenty of guys had it super wired, but still--epic Woodson event. I think Chris mostly got the recollection of the vibe right too. But of course, there were the "pin scars" on "In the Pit", the glued and reglued knob (later a screw?) on Cool Jerk/Hairdo. Some other random bullsh#t. Remember when "someone" bolted Uncertainty!? Silly stuff. Mostly just good clean fun though. Weird to be seeing all that stuff so far back now...

Hey Donny, you should come up for some spring snowboarding and MX riding...I can hook you up with some friends who ride trail up here and we'll BBQ and talk stacks of sh#t. Maybe get Henny out of the dustbowl for a visit to watch that KP footage...was he always that afflicted by Moosehead, Henny? And thinking back to those times, I'm pretty sure Dave & Mike Orland & I all attended your wedding--either as straight up crashers or guests of guests (twice removed) of someone who was legitimately invited. Either that or it was a Todd Gordon party. Who can keep all this stuff straight after a while?

Earlier in this thread Donny posted:
There is a really good roof crack out by pala. I think you go up couser canyon road and it's on the east side. You have to climb a slab route to get to the roof. We took Rick Piggot up there and he onsight lead the roof. If I remember it was hands to thin hands and 25 ft long. I think he rated it 5.12something. If your driving south on I-15 and know where to look, you can see the roof in the east as your driving up the hill from the pala turnoff.

Anyway, here's the shot of that. I don't know if I posted that sometime a long ways back or not...love the Piggot standard: those North Face tights and a Metallica T-shirt always.

Good to hear from Chris K.
Chris P, I used to go up uncertainty principle in my acics running shoes but was never man enough to solo the thing. Props to Chris K.
Spring snowboarding? I'm used to the dry powder that Utah has but I could maybe make a run up and hang out for a weekend. Do people still climb in the gorge? There is probably a hundred 5.10 and easier routes in there I haven't done yet. Maybe bring Henny along to get the TR set up for us. Leave KP in Josh, that's where he needs to stay. I have to check out Hennys ranch and see if I will need a tractor to make an MX track in the north forty.

Good luck with that MX track thing. You'd be dodging cows, goats, chickens, cats, dogs, coyotes, deer, and kids. Wouldn't have to worry about me though, no way I'd ever get near you. You'd run my azz over on purpose. Feathers everywhere.

Sounds like we need to do something on the eastside.

Edit: Chris - looks like you have pictures you should be posting. That is classic Rick, eh? The man in black.

Yeah, Henny, that's pretty much ultramegaclassic Rick right there. With those 5.10/Verticals and the red 4". If I can make it down to this thing, I'm first heading over to Wilson's to get me some of that. I think the only harness I have left is an old Pulp Alpine...

I'll have to dig for more fotos. Lord knows where the slide pile is some 20 years hence. Funny how a kind of incidental thing acquires significance over time.

Nah, Donny, nobody climbs in The Gorge anymore, man. It's all about the 12-foot siege and spittlefest on a pile of foam at the MicroPenis boulders or whatever. Hell, I don't know. Yes. There's so much climbing up here it's just senseless. That's why I'm a runner now, man. Plus, beanies make my head look like Charlie Brown's. More so.

Well, open invite if you're ever rollin' through. Maybe I'll see you at the wingding if I can escape this way out backwoods hell!

What about this story...any truth to it?

Rick Piggot was to solo Lie Detector for photos one day but the photographer never showed. Rick soloed it anyways!

I don't know about that one, but I heard that the "pin scars" on Widow Bereft were actually from Chuck Norris' first ascent--free solo.

I'm just sayin'...
