I don't know why, but this song has been playing in my head most of the day. All right, it's very smoky here and all, but I'm under the influence of excellent HEPA filters. I have not watched the news, so it can't be that. But I remember singing this song up in the WInds in 87 or 88, and singing Very Loudly, just in case any bears were listening. You never know. I was solo.
On the Turning Away. PF, of course. :)

So, enjoy.
And thank you for Miles and the Beatles. What a great day of music!

right of center is SP crater, an unlikely gap exists between it and it's associated basalt flow.
this picture was taken alongside the road which road passes right there, through that gap:
edit for clarity:
right where that huge lava flow appears to leak out of the base of the cone, that's where my picture was taken.
from the aerial view it looks continuous, not so. enlarge your B&W picture, the road is visible.
and it can be inferred from this vantage:

Not sure I follow what you're sayin', hooblie. I'll give it another chance to make sense to me, okay?

Kamping, starring Bob Kamps, courtesy of Bonnie Kamps' FB pages.
Guest appearance by Dave Rearick.
I'm a big 'Fan' of Bonnie, whose name is so appropriate!
Bonnie wrote:
Robert Francis Kamps, US Air Force Recruit.
Bob graduated from high school the year before the Korean War started. He enlisted in the Air Force because he believed it might increase his odds of surviving. At that time, 1951, the Air Force issued the recruits brown shoes and bootblack, as this relatively new (1947) branch of the service was still finding its way.
Once through basic he was sent to Suitland, Maryland. After receiving top security clearance he spent the rest of his tour working in intelligence along with hand-picked members of other branches of the service as well as civilians.
Bob did not conform well to the structured life of the Air Force. His escapades while bucking authority were hilarious. More than once he came very close to getting himself in a lot of trouble. But he was very good at his job, and intrigued by it. He wouldn't tell what they were actually working on until years later when a friend's wife heard all about it on a radio program and went home to tell her husband she finally knew what they had been doing.
Bob got a slightly early out in 1955 so that he could start college. He ended up at UCLA where his first bachelors degree was in Slavic Languages. He had considered continuing the work he had done in the Air Force.
Many know of Bob because of his rock climbing. Close friends treasure stories of his adventures as an Entrecrapeur. But I treasure his tales of his days in the Air Force. He told them when we were dating. I knew then that life with him would never be dull.
Ponder what might have ensued had Dolt's USAF enlistment ran concurrently with Kamps' 'career,' had he remained a Prop-head. A smooth mesh or sparks flying? Likely a mix of the two.
Thanks for the pix, Bonnie!

On the Turning Away
On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerized as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there will be
No more turning away?

Post #1948, the same as my birth year.
Harold Glenn Hamm (born December 11, 1945) is an American entrepreneur
primarily involved in the oil and gas business
who is best known for pioneering the development of the large shale oil resources of the Bakken formation.
On January 16, 2015 Hamm was ranked by Forbes magazine as the 48th richest person in United States
and 132nd richest person in the world, with a net worth estimated at $9.3 million billion,
which decreased from $18.7 milion billion in September 2014.
In 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney named Hamm as his energy advisor and thereafter
Hamm made substantial monetary and advisory contributions to the election effort.

And climbers voice approval,
I was stoked to finally land a FISH! He turned out to be the new normal climber , wanted to use my rope, his was two years old and was worked from Top rope soloing, with a cam, not a toothed device. Mine has got to be at least ten years old (or more) and I use a toothy Tribloc!
This leads to taking both ropes 1st test past, the second he fails and augers in then explodes in a fire ball . . .
He has no sak! No bag, man, just a tiny tiny '920 cu inch pathetic water tote!
I am crushed to carry all the weight
These guys? Whimps, should be paying me...
Hey Jbro will you engrave a letter of recommendation for me?
I onsighted I'd Rather Be In Phillidelphia
So packed to the tipping over point I lead the way.
Then , he wanted to know was there anything good (easy) to lead?
"he really wanted to practice his trad, he started trad-ing last February and has led 5.7 in the Gunks,"
I should have told him be carful what you wish for, today's indoor trained climbers have a lot of strange habits, this guy was no different. When I pressed him on the need or lack of need for chalk, he balked and sad his hands sweat "real bad."
Then I showed him some of the easy entry , introduction routes. His eyes got wide and said he was not so good on roofs.
You should of seen this tuff younge kid try to bury his fear. Standing a head and a half taller than me ,my beta was not much help to him ,but I gave it when asked.
Three choices and of course default to me.
1) Members Only, 5.7 pg.
( all things being equal just meeting a strange, a fat old man! Takes everything to R, but I digress)
members Only is a climb that shadows a corner that provides gear, to climbers left, the face is clean and his fun action at intervals, but nothing sustained. It romps up 90 feet to a blocky overhang that swallows gear and your arms & legs if you let it. Better to pass by using a swinging monkey technique.
2) Stress Test
the climbing went well. The second ascent of Stress Test of course did not occur, I swell with pride as the guy whines that there is no gear, it is not more than 5.5!
