Yeah, Mike, great hearing from you again too! It was good running into you at the J Tree reunion at KP's hacienda a few years back.
Not sure where those old photos of Jaws and Driving South came from this time around. Last time there was a Woodson reunion Ray Olsen kindly posted them on the SuperTopo thread. But I didn't know there was a reunion happening this year until Randy Vogel mentioned it to me quite recently.
And Illusion Dweller, thanks for your greetings. I moved to Scotland cause I got a job at the University of Edinburgh just after finishing my Ph.D. at UC Irvine. Have lived here ever since. The winter climbing and mountain biking are world class. Rock climbing is damn good, but somewhat limited by the wet climate. I really miss the sunshine and warm granite of California. But you should definitely visit the place if you get a chance.
Cheers

If yo are coming to the slanderfest at the leichtfuss casa saturday nite there is another lodging option. About 5 miles or less from the casa is Rincon Hotel and Casino, a fairly upscale place. Check the internet for info.

actually my point was that woodson isnt just a bunch of cracks, the face climbs are also high quality and far more abundant.
Unfortunately words sometimes get in the way of what one is trying to say, and i ended up saying that the notion of woodson being a crack mecca is a misperception...youll be a lot better off if ya dont pay too much attention to what i say
Hey bob, for cracks theres this place called yosemite you oughta check out.

Gary helps Ron take his boot outta his mouth so we can understand him more clearly, "Let go Ron, let me do it, I'm stronger than you are! I've been clearing airways for years!"

Dick Cilley. I'll meet you at JT on Thursday evening (18th). Climb some wide at JT on Friday and then head down to SD Friday night. Tom will already be there. Got a place to stay for both of us. This'll be a blast. Will start crash diet tomorrow. Counting on you to bring the tape.

sorry jb. woodson will always (comparatively) be there, and much more mellow after the hun's retreat. the ephemeral seduction that tahquitz currently provides (so cal ice!)is a much stronger enticement............

Anxious,
Woodson is always "mellow" these days, every day at that, even on weekends anymore! Back in the day Woodson was expected to be crawling with climbers on the weekends and a good number throughout the week. I never heard of anyone concerned that there were too many people on the mountain back then.
During the contests in '86 and '90 the mountain was packed with folks from wide and far, all vying to be a part of something that Woodson could only bring to them. On March 19 - 21, 2010, three days out of (365), Woodson will again be "packed with folks from wide and far, all vying to be a part of something that Woodson could only bring to them." It's too bad you won't be there. I wish you were.

Is Dick Cilley back in the country? - last I heard he was hanging out in a cave in Spain.
And what about other Woodson Old Timers like the Almadovar Bros and Tom and Elke Lindner - are they still around?

Here's another crappy scan from the same session as Watusi conversed up on that traverse. My advice to the younger generation, "When you get older, you're gonna wish you took better care of your negatives, err, image files, whatever, maybe I mean teeth..."

Here's a 3 months late explanation (as best as I recall) of how "Deport Jonny" came to be named...
Jonny came to town (I want to say with Maria and Powell) and both he and Powell climbed it. Jonny called it "Under Their Noses" since it was on a boulder that already had established problems.
Obviously, that could not stand, and so Rick Piggott, Don Bedford, Dan Haughelstine, et al. started referring to it (jokingly) as "Deport Jonny" which of course stuck.
I'd hate to see the important history of 18 feet of premium Woodson granite lapse into obscurity!
