I've been to Alaska

Twice

Working

Not climbing or tuoristing but working with ordinary Alaskans.

I'll take a gov of that state with a 80-90% approval rating over a freshman senator and "community organizer" or lifetime east coast pol

Any day.

Not to many here seem to know much about Alaskans.

"She's a HOCKEY MOM, said so herself."

Well, she's got the Canuck vote sewn up, anyway. We're about to have an unnecessary election here - she can always run for prime minister. Though about 90% of Canadians are nominally more liberal than her, which could be a problem. But if she can take it into the corners, and has an ok slapshot...

She does have executive experience. Of being a mayor of a small town, and of being for a short time, governor of a state that is very unlike much of the rest of the US.
That puts her at basically zero in the foreign policy experience (not that Barack has alot, but she has even less). The economic base of Alaska is very different than anywhere else. Which other states paid almost every resident $1600 last year? I wouldn't think that running that translates well to running almost any other state, and definitely not to the whole US.

Be that as it may, this is a risk that could pay off. It certainly looks like Rove at work, as it shores up the conservative base.

As to Lynne's question of whether I would be asking these about a man, 100% yes. It makes zero difference to me that she is female. I don't like her social views one bit, and would be asking equally tough questions about anyone with those views. Should I be giving her a break because she's a woman?

John McCain needs what Kinky Friedman calls "a checkup from the neck up."

In choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate, he is not thinking "outside the box," as some have said. More like out of his mind.

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment.

In choosing this featherweight, McCain passed over Tom Ridge, a decorated combat hero, a Cabinet secretary and the former two-term governor of the large, complex state of Pennsylvania. iReport.com: 'McCain pick might be a gimmick'

He passed over Mitt Romney, who ran a big state, Massachusetts; a big company, Bain Capital; and a big event, the Olympics.

He passed over Kay Bailey Hutchison, the Texas senator who is knowledgeable about the military, good on television and -- obviously -- a woman.

Don't Miss
McCain picks Palin as running mate
Election Center 2008
He passed over Joe Lieberman, his best friend in the Senate and fellow Iraq Kool-Aid drinker.

He passed over former congressman, trade negotiator and budget director Rob Portman.

And he also passed over Mike Huckabee, the governor of Arkansas.

For months, the McCainiacs have said they will run on his judgment and experience. In his first presidential decision, John McCain has shown that he is willing to endanger his country, potentially leaving it in the hands of someone who simply has no business being a heartbeat away from the most powerful, complicated, difficult job in human history.

Switch Lynne? Don't I remember you saying that you had an avocado orchard? I'd be OK running one of those :-). And I write software to handle Rx data.

I'm not a big fan of those labels. They don't say much about any individual. And she is nice looking, but my concern is hardly whether or not I'd date her if she were single.

What does concern me is that this makes the ticket look even more to me like a repeat of Bush/Cheney. Socially very conservative, McCain is not too far away from a neo-con, and while McCain at least seemed to have a clue about global warming, she tips things back the other way.

"POINT BEING: If this VP candidate gal was a man with her back ground would you all be treating him the same way you are analyzing and speaking about her....not, I think."

I'm glad you cleared up what you meant because I most certainly would want to know what the qualifications of the person are no matter their sex and so far I'm not particularly impressed.

Gov for 1 and a half years is not really that impressive, especially backed up with her other efforts. She changed college three times before she graduated.

The only thing I have learned so far that I like is that she is willing to go after corruption, of course we will see how the case turns out about her using her power to get her inlaw fired.

A lot of women will vote for her just because she is a woman. That is sad.

I couldn't care less if either party's choice for V-P was a three-headed, purple skinned, multi-sexual space alien. (Not thinking of anyone in particular, you understand. And of course born in the U.S., and over 30 years old.) As long as the person could credibly step in as president, if needed, and competently lead the U.S.A. Maybe not lead it in directions I'd entirely agree with, but do a decent job of it.

This is all the more important in the case of a 72 year old presidential candidate who may not be in the best of health.

Palin may eventually be able to step in as president, but there's little in her background and experience to show that she could do so now, or any time soon. It might work out - but it's a big risk.

I always like your comments stevep...thoughtful and not vitriolic.....say if I become a climbing bum for awhile, you want to spend a vacation here tending the grove and the dogs? But you'd have to write new Dme etc programs for the pharmacy....that would be awesome !

If you be serious email me..also have desert place available one hour away from pharmacy. Lynners

Say, Mighty Hiker, I've learned that those that look and are diagnosed as ready to die can live forever and those that should not and look not do.

Anyone anyday can die. We have AIDs patients that never should have outlived the one I'm referring to ...but they did. Health is a criteria, but not the overwhelming one in choosing a leader....IMHO

Moosie, I would Never vote for a woman just cause she is a female....
hopefully most gals weigh the info and credentials and then choose their candidate and vote.

Say Moosie, I have been on the cutting edge in healthcare for 20 years....anyone can die from anything today or tomorrow...there are no guarentees...

That's why I'm here on the Taco...I saw it happen in front of my eyes. I live each day...appreciate it and try to help the people I touch that day to know their day is a gift...TOMORROW MAY NOT BE THERE FOR US.

Hi Lynne, I live here so I should be around most days though my health sometimes limits me. I look forward to meeting you.

Edit: And don't take it so hard about your sex, if Hilary had gotten the nomination a fair number of men would have voted against her simply because of her sex.

America has a ways to go to wake up to equality.
