"The Sandias have maybe 5 good routes"

Define good! It's true that many routes in the Sandias are "long loose and wandering (what's not to love!?!?)" but there are considerably more than 5 "good" routes.

If by "good" you mean 5.11 and above, than maybe so.

We got on the West Ridge (5.7) of the Frog a few weekends ago. It's clear it didn't see much traffic. But it was awesome! Clean rock and three full length pitches of pretty sustained climbing.

Those who dump on Boulder don't see the big picture of the town. It has the best of everything, including the pretentious, entitled, self-proclaimed gurus of enlightenment that we've all come to universally love and hate. People do things at a very high level there, and that is it's appeal. If you want to live and play very well, then Boulder is the place to be. It doesn't come cheap, so make sure that you have your career and finances in hand.

La Provence. Easy village, access to big city like Nice, year-round climbing on the coast or Verdon. Good cheese and excellent wine. Reasonable property prices and cost of living.

KL Malaysia. Central Hub for SOuth East Asia. Climbing within 15 mintes of downtown and loads of climbing within two hours. Big Wall Granite to Caves of Limestone.

Chattanooga TN. Loads of climbing withing striking distance on work days. Easily in reach for weekend trips to North Carolina. Work available.

North Conway New Hampshire, OK skiing and Ice climbing to make up for no rock climbing during cold months.

With all that said, I'm looking closely at houses in South Lake Tahoe. Most likely on the Nevada side to keep taxes down. My Second home will be overseas.

Boulder, hands down, if you need to work. If you don't, I like it here in Ouray. Good sport climbing with minimal approaches, close to the Black Canyon and Utah Desert and tremendous mountain hiking for conditioning.

Truckee is awful. It's all climbed out and nothing new anywhere near. There is nothing else to do and no culture or music nearby. It's impossible to get away from trees and water unless you try. You have to drive almost 4 hours for anything resembling world class cities, surfing, the east side and Yosemite. Instead of cool gym scenes we only have humble Olympians and casual athletes. It is actually impossible to be cool because everyone else is better than you in 4 or 5 activities and, to add insult, no one even cares if you climb or not. The food in CA is nearly not the best in the world. It's a noisy little highway town with a train and it's kinda whatever.

Cortina, Italy. If you can't get it done in the Dolomites, you're doing something wrong.
