maldaly, I hadn't heard anything about being dumped, although I had heard a woman complained to the police about his stalking behavior and others complained he took photos of them without their consent. I suspect the opposite is true, that he has never been romantically involved with anyone and has probably never even been laid. It would be hard to strike up a fire with the opposite sex when he wouldn't even respond to people when they addressed him.

When a guy is nuts and doesn't care if he dies, there's not much you can do.

I'm interested in what separates the violence in the US from other western (and non-western countries) I think it's more culture than guns but I simply don't know.

I do think one item of gun control that would be reasonable is this; You register your gun and it's ballistics signature is associated from the get-go with that registration. I don't know how much that would cost but economies of scale would apply. When somebody gets shot, we'd know who's "official" gun did it. That wouldn't help in many cases, but would in others.

"But then you get burglaries and whatever (not that this is the case here -- the guns were bought legally)"

How do you figure?

If Dude had answered the questions truthfully on the Federal Paperwork everybody has to fill out every time anybody buys a handgun in America, he would have been denied the purchase.

A handgun purchased through the use of fraudulent paperwork cannot in any way said to be "bought legally".

Karl writes:

How would that work? There are more than enough variables at work in ballistics to make that plan totally unworkable. If it is tried anyway all it would do is divert resources away from techniques that are already proven to work.

This "ballistics signature" can be altered by something as common and innocent as sloppy (or no) cleaning, and deliberately as simple as dragging a file across the breech-face.

We need to get back to what really does work; When someone like this Jackass behaves the way he did in the months and years leading up to what happened Tuesday, he needs to be isolated. He should have been kicked out of the University at least a year ago, had his Student Visa seized, and sent back to Korea.

You're probably right about the ballistics signature Chaz.

Maybe I'm not following this story closely enough. What did this guy do before this year that warranted his being sent back to Korea? Do you really want a government that's so intrusive and harsh that a few questionable things get you put away or banished?

Bottom line, the status quo is about as good as we're going to get and this stuff is just going to happen. I'd rather live with risk than live in a police state.

Bluering-

No waiting period in Virginia. The guy walked in and walked out with the gun and ammo the same day.

He was also a resident alien. Had a green card, so if they kicked him out of school he'd have just had to go home... to northern Virginia.

It would also appear that it wasn't a box that he checked incorrectly, but a box that a judge checked when he was committed that didn't disqualify him to purchase a firearm. Can't recall exactly what it was that would have disqualified him, something like being 'voluntarily' sent to a mental hospital rather than involuntarily committed, but maybe thats not quite right. Anyway, it doesn't seem that he lied on his background check, just that the passed by a gnat's ass and got himself a gun.

Sadly enough, it seems as if these are the kinds of prices we pay to live in a society that is as free as ours. We are free to buy firearms as we please and free to act like a sociopathic assh*le as long as we don't break any specific laws, and nobody can do anything about it. Our civil liberties are costly.

I'll cut out the sarcasm if you cut out the uncalled for vitriolic attacks. It seems the only thing you've really got against us 3 mice is our leftward lean. No? The Taco'd be a pretty boring campfire if we were all leaning the same way. IMO.

I've posted my name here enough times to escape anonymity I figure.

pc, all you have to see to realize what an irresponsible childish mind you are dealing with in Judy is in the heading of his thread about shooting someone. When a nutjob who carries a gun and should be presumed to be a mature person resorts to such mindless crap to draw attention to himself, perhaps some might construe this as a warning sign of someone who should be disarmed.

I've seen a lot of cops do strange things but never one who made jokes in public about shooting someone. At least when they are sober.

I forget the term they use to describe someone so desperate for attention. I guess delusional squeaker will have to do for now.

I generally carry concealed however cannot carry on campus. There are a large group of law abiding folks who would be good to have armed in these situations but we are busy following the rules and laws in place.
It's a really sad case here and who's to know if a trained, reasonable person with a ccw would have changed things as it's easy to make these calls after the fact.
Sounds like he needed someone to talk to and his varying cries to be noticed weren't paid enough attention.

Fat, go back and read the history of this thing. Or not. You will see what you want to see. You are obviously shooting from the hip. Shooting blanks at that.

In maldaly's 4-19 9:15 post, he wrote; PS: I do not advocate outlawing guns but there does need to be some sort of regulation.

Do you people really think that there are not enough regulations? Give me a break. How many rules and regs do we have regarding drugs? Tons. And more every year. Do we still have a drug problem? How many new provisions do we have regarding DUI every year? Many. Do people still do it? Yes. Alot. As much as you would like, you cant legislate morality. And while you whine and lie about your civil liberties being stripped by the evil Bush administration, you have no problem with the government making it harder (or impossible) for intelligent responsible people from owning guns. Hoping like hell that it will somehow compel the lawless (or crazy) from getting guns and using them in a bad way. Since you think that Big Bro is so evil, dont you want to be able to own alot of guns to protect yourself from them? I am sad to say that there will always be bad people doing bad things. Just do your best and watch your (and your families) own ass. You would be a fool to rely on any political party to do it for you.

LOL! Naw!, Judy, you stirred the pot long ago and haven't stopped yet. Who gets to carry the bullet? You or AKClimber?

You and Jesus need to get your acts together. You seem to be at odds with each other.

I admit to telling a few good lies on occasion when the truth somehow does not convey the proper message.

The difference in you and me is that I only tell lies and don't live a lie... like a whiny hypocrite.

Have they taken your gun yet? LOL!
