Conservatives have forgotten our roots and are pushing us towards anarchy, i.e., an unregulated society

Barbarism or despotism maybe, but my anarchist friends would vehemently disagree that Trump or the conservatives are pushing us towards “anarchy.”

Anarchy is not synonymous with chaos or barbarism though many people misuse the term as such.

Anarchy is law and freedom without force.
Despotism is law and force without freedom.
Barbarism force without freedom and law.
Republicanism is force with freedom and law.

Immanuel Kant,
Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View

I think Trump would love to be a despot within a neo-feudalistic state like Putin.

The conservatives like Paul Ryan see the wealthy and the corporations as morally superior because of their success. They envision a Randian utopia where unbridled capitalism frees these Avenger-esque super heroes to make the world a better place. But corporations are psychopaths, and that way leads to barbarism.

I don't think I can find two terms more at odds with one another than conservatism and anarchy.

I’m still friends with some people who voted for Trump, but I tend to avoid people who used to be friendly and fun but are now sour and bitter.

Ballo conveniently forgets about how the bills get paid and where the money comes from.

I did?

I wasn't making an anti-tax or even an anti-social contract statement.

The term IIRC originates with Hobbes who was IIRC trying to scientifically explain the nature of man. Taxes existed long before Hobbes and word on the street is it'll be with us always.

The problem with taxes in this country is it's unapportioned, unlimited in scope, and determined by people who are unrestrained in any real way (thanks to the 17th amendment).

But again, these are more napkin notes on the Titanic.

This is the sad part of the politics of identity that has gripped this country. Why even get emotionally invested in which elite gets to randomly wiggle the levers of power (which IMO aren't even hooked up to anything except the foghorn).

I, for one, continue to climb with whoever so long they know what they're doing WRT climbing. Climbers used to get punched over bolting ethics, not bent out of shape because Nixon spoke to China.

Jim, um, where are you getting this?

All I did was doubt that the sole reason for the inquisition was to steal jew gold. I didn't say the inquisition was a good thing.

Jim, if you have an argument please come out with it instead of being vague and smarmy.

The irony given the subject seems lost on you.

OK, how about hypocrisy? The subject was the inquisition in which many people were accused of being something other than they claimed like crypto-jews. By your language you seem to be implying I'm some kind of crypto myself, but what? A crypto-letrado?

Instead of tying yourself in knots maybe you ought to take my statements at face value instead of looking for hidden meaning or some nefarious agenda.

The Declaration of Independence was based on the liberal British ideas about individual rights being ordained by a universal authority higher than any King or state.
i.e., the Social Contract
The Declaration on Independence was written by a major proponent of the Social Contract theory, Thomas Jefferson, and the entire declaration IS nothing more than a reiteration of the Social Contract.

Not the Wikipedia is the definitive source on the subject, but it is easy:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_contract

Read the 5th paragraph, starting with "Locke believed that..."

And some more reading:
https://polsci101.wordpress.com/2009/12/14/political-theory-in-the-declaration-of-independence/

https://www.thoughtco.com/social-contract-in-politics-105424

Of course, the definite sources are the works of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and the D.O.I. itself.

It should be clarified that the person who wrote that post about having a party if DT or someone who supports him died, DID NOT WRITE that they wished anyone would die.

Maybe a small distinction, but it is an important one. Especially since the DT and his supporters are always spouting off about fake news.

I'm not an academic, actually, I work at a national laboratory for the past 20 odd years (I had taught at UMass/Amherst in the 1990's).

My "arguments" aren't political, on these posts, they are pointing out that if you actually had any conviction to your opinions you wouldn't hide behind the anonymity of an avatar.

And many people that read and post to SuperTopoForum have read my trip reports, and more, they know who I am and have not trouble coming up to me when they see me climbing somewhere. When I post I think about that. That's a big difference (and not a political one, I've met Jody, and Cosmic and Reilly in climber settings), they would stand up for what they post here, whether or not I agree is quite beside the point.

My criticism of the current administration: it is one thing to shoot your mouth off, quite another to come up with some policy that effects the proposed changes, I don't see that the recent comments that lend to the title of this thread have anything backing them up, in terms of leading the world at least, and even in this country they are horrendously counterproductive.

I am happy to discuss any of my posts with any of the climbers I'd run into at any of the climbing locations I frequent. Apparently I am recognizable enough that people introduce themselves to me "out of the blue."

A little history for the rest, my personal attack was in response to your personal attack on me on another thread, which, in turn, was in response to an attack on another poster I made in response to an attack on me. Comical in a way.

Anyhow, no doubt you're a good guy in real life. And I thoroughly enjoyed your John Muir Trail TR. Still, just wondering if you have ever called upon like-minded liberal posters here to use their real names--or provide a certain mix of content? I doubt it. If I'm wrong, feel free to link.

As for folks here recognizing you at the local crag, I think that's great--and, along with your education, sounds like a source of pride for you. Not likely we'll ever cross paths as I climb only alpine/mountaineering type stuff up here in WA, and throughout Canada, Alaska, and, occasionally, South America. I do like to ski down at Shasta in the spring sometimes, however. Only a few years behind you in age I think, the backpacking and high alpine traverse stuff is gaining appeal and I'm doing a Baranof Island trip this spring.

Anyway, my point is a bit of a contrast with yours. Until last year, I'd never considered politics a condition of friendship or partnership on a rope. Like music or film, boycotting liberals in the outdoor world leaves one with fewer options. But post-2016, I have cut off at least a couple folks who, frankly, became so unhinged about the election that I no longer consider them stable. I see this derangement here too. It's really quite sad. To be fair, you don't seem as hysterical as most.

Anyhow, there you go. No apologies--and feel free to call out those with whom you agree from time to time in the same manner you do politicos like me.

Pretty easy to say the same thing about any political/religious zealotry. Liberal, conservative, Democrat, Repub, Christian, Whatever...

Ain't nobody got it all under their grasp.

But, all that aside, give us some climbing stories

If you want some mountains that have snow, ice and glaciers with crevasses that don't pretend to be snow slopes, come to Canada, the richest shithole in North America.

PNW excluded from this rant because those Washington State climbers are friendly and know their way around an ice axe and pair of crampons.

All you have to do is make it past the California produce checkpoint without catching a 15 year prison sentence for a half eaten carrot.

That's some funny stuff re the People's Republik of Cali. As for Canada, a friggin awesome place. Far from "socialist" like many would have us believe, I know this because no place on earth has as many RV owners.

Great climbing, I've spent time in the Fairweather Range, the Coast Mountains (south), the Interiors, and the Icefields. Getting on in years, I climbed Skyladder a couple summers ago all by my lonesome--while my wife watched with binoculars from the Center. (Or, as you say, Centre :-.) Didn't realize what a bitch the AA descent was until it was too late and got back to the snow coach road around midnight. She was not happy.

When Nixon finally kicked off, I told my boss something along the lines that Nixon dying so Federal workers could get the day off was the best thing he ever did for the country.

I think he was really offended.

No, JoeM, our transition to the third world, or actually second world status, began in the mid 1970s with the dismantling of the New Deal and the assault on labor.

No, I think it began far earlier than that; in fact, in 1619, one year before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock when the first load of slaves were unloaded in New England.

The big problem with the US right from the git go has been slavery. The Civil War didn't really end it. Slavery is the gift that keeps on giving in the USA.

I sometimes think the Tory Samuel Johnson had our whole history nailed when he wrote, in 1775, How is it that we hear the loudest yelps for liberty among the drivers of Negroes?

Blah, blah, blah. Classic obfuscation. You dopes wish death upon everything and everyone who challenges your ever-changing libtard purity test. Even as you tell the mirror how wonderful you are.

Same as it ever was. Last time, you even had the date of assassination picked out. What a sad bunch of human beings.

Lituya --

You do remember that Trump, when running for president, said that, if he lost, his supporters would have to consider Second Amendment remedies to deal with a Hilary Clinton administration?

Try to stay on topic, B. Wishing death upon Trump and his supporters. Aren't you the least bit embarrassed about your behavior?

BTW, I think HG2's allcaps might be an attempt to wave-off her Secret Service friends in DC. She is very well-connected, you know. ;-
