No one can retire.
It's never ever been done nor will it ever be done.
The living entity by its true constitutional position is always active.
Even a total couch potato makes movements every now and then toward the refrigerator .......

Laughing, WBraun. Guess it's all in the definition of the word.....retirement. The word retread just came to mind. That might fit. My tire has worn out. I need to figure out how to keep my life machine running.....with purpose and joy. So I have tried something new. I like my retread. :)
Pro doesn't make sense but hey, it's holiday thinking. Cheers!

So your old beat up body will climb what, 2 days a week? Then you can spend a day doing sh!t around the house. You can take a big hike another day. What do you do with the other 3 days a week?! Watch TV? Heck, you ARE going to be sooooo bored.

Ah....but the beauty of retirement when the body is not beat up. Heading out to the Black Canyon today to climb with George Lowe on Saturday and Sunday. Monday will be packrafting with the wife and friends down the Uncomphagre River. Tuesday some chores around the house and a bit of sport climbing on Wednesday.
With no job commitments I don't really have to plan beyond that.....damn!

 Said nobody, ever.
In reality two of the best days of my life come to mind. One was spent an Ahwahnee ledge by myself, a full day sitting and just watching the day pass, I was not bored in the slightest. Another was a rest day in Jtree which was spent mostly sitting with my back against a rock sipping some mint tea while watching the day go by, I was not bored. Those were both great days.
Part of the rat race of work puts you into the mindset that downtime is boring and bad. Weekends must get crammed with good stuff to make up for 5 days of being locked down by the man.
During the couple decent breaks I have had from work I was very rarely bored as such. The few restless boring bits were upon arriving in a new area where I didn't have the lay of the land or a campfire to hang at. Such boredom rarely lasted a day.
I do not fear boredom after retirement in the slightest, even if I only have the ability to stumble to somewhere pleasant and sit against a rock while watching the day go by.

Warning: The first three years after retiring are the most deadly for men.
Always have a project that has meaning for you. Not necessarily climbing, as those can be fragile, like the human body.

Oh, sure. Great for you. But what about me? Now who am I gong to blame when things go to sh#t?

But now what? If I can't blame my problems on Locker's demented resoling, who can I blame? Does his retirement mean I have to start taking responsibility for my own failings?

Nicely said, Moof. I've had some great days like that, too. One jumps to mind. It was early on in a coast to coast solo bike tour, and I was pumping through North Conway, NH. I REALLY needed a rest day. I stocked up with supplies and found where the national forest started outside of town. It took some hunting, but I finally discovered a small lake. I pushed my bike down through the trees and set up camp. The next day I watched the mist drift over the lake in the morning, the loons echoing forlornly through the forest. I drank coffee, read, scribbled in my journal and spent the entire day by myself in the quiet beside the water--a great day!
Here was another, more active day--in retirement--me and my wife and two new friends, one the awesome Phyl from TACO!--having a blast in the Upper Gorge:

Perfectly happy sitting in my cottage in Wales telling a dubious Mistle Thrush why I can't let him in onto the white carpet. OK, not perfectly happy as I hate being the bearer of bad news. It didn't occur to me that he might only understand Welsh.

Retirement isn't for wussies. Two days climbing in the Black Canyon this past weekend, sport climbing tomorrow and then a three day packraft trip on the Dolores River starting on Wednesday. When will it end? The only one using the rocking chair is my cat.
