Not exactly Lust in the Dust...more like Lass in the Grass or Sweet Yield in Snell's Field in Donini's Stash from the Nash.
Someone has to have a classic photo of that storied bar. Lots of good shots of Hemming in Tom Frost's collection which I am now administering through NACHA. I doubt Tom went into the BN with a camera though.

Dom, I had the chance to dig through some old slides and found that I do have a picture of the National from 1967. It isn't the greatest picture however, as it is somewhat distant (from across the street). However, if you are interested I can try to get it digitized and post it.
My own memories of the "Nash" are much more prosaic than Jim's, unfortunately--just beers, coffee, watching the locals play 'fussbol', Maurice behind the bar, and those bouncy French music 'videos' constantly in the background.
That same trip I had my one very brief encounter with Hemming. I was walking up to Montenvers from Cham with a Scots climber I'd met in the Biolay. We were en route to Chalet Austria prior to doing my first climb in the Alps on L'M. We had just crested the steep part of the hike out of the valley when we encountered a lone climber on his way down. He was tall and very striking in appearance. We recognized who he was but did our best not to seem 'star-struck'. We exchanged the few words typical in such encounters and then moved on in our opposite directions. Despite the briefness of the meeting he definitely had a 'presence' to the extent that I can still picture the scene today.

Steve...no dust in Snell’s field, just mud and the occasional gross little pile of upchuck from the previous nights festivities. Sometimes the upchuck landed on top of an inch of congealed bacon fat in a frying pan left out in the rain.
