Fat dad-
Yeah, hard to separate our own musical tastes from what we feel is a "strong cover".
There are artists that I love who's versions of songs I'm not that into.
As far as this thread going downhill, or however you put it, I guess that's accurate if we're talking about Jimi's All Along The Watchtower, one of THE iconic covers, pretty much synonymous with him and less the original songwriter.

Chris- Always loved Sublime's We're Only Gonna Die...

I guess when the original songwriter likes the cover more than their original, it could be considered "strong".

Here's a brilliant restatement of a song so iconic she doesn't even need to sing the chorus. So dissipated and melancholy, a complete revision of the original. [Click to View YouTube Video]

Any song by Dean Martin has GOT to be a cover, right??

Local guitar warrior Gary Hoey (one of the most prolific "cover guys" out there, playing his version of "Low Rider"(theme to Endless Summer 2).

And, to fit in with the holiday season Gary Hoey plays "Carol of the Bells"

Edit: Reminding us to not take this stuff too seriously, more Christmas themed Gary Hoey

To the chigrin of my son, I really like some of Jack Whites stuff. His cover of Death Letter Blues, a Son House standard.

Nice find, Tad!
Hadn't thought about it, but PJ's a good fit for the Who; adroit, powerful with a hint of frenzy. Vedder's voice does Love really well.

Thanks!

Gary Hoey, haven't heard his name in a long time. Back when I was playing in bands, mid/late 90s, I got to jam with him a little in a music store in Atlanta. He was doing some demo for a new model of Fender Strat later in the day.

It was embarassing, the guy was so far out of my league. He did give me some good tips for practicing though, stuff that I remember to this day. One being to play clean and really loud when you do practice drills and exercises, so mistakes stand out. The other being some specific exercises to get finger speed up.
