SUPs irk me.
Give me the same feeling I get when driving by Mondos and fighting the urge to yell out my car window:
"YOU'RE NOT REAL SURFERS" to the hordes.

*shrug*

Hoping to get out tomorrow on my 6'2
=)

Just judging by the girls in these photos I would say it is a wonderful sport.

,,,,and...a pretty good vantage point for "bird" watching.

SS,

As my daughter would say "Surfstar are you jelly?" (aka jeolous)

Don't be a hater. For those who are really good on SUP its about 10:1 ratio for wave riding, I kid you not.

And there is plenty of room in the ocean for all of us. SUPers can quickly paddle to where its quiet, and where they won't upset the locals who might be prone to fist fights.

I saw one of them for sale at Sports Chalet the other day - those boards are like 12 feet tall and about $100/foot.

How about an inflatable sup?
Would it be boring if one were to pack in and paddle on backcoutry lakes?
Might be cool.

I think the answer to the original query "Is SUP as boring as it looks?" might be in this film by my friend Mike Waltze.

The original stand-up whitewater pioneer was Jeff Snyder of West Virginia. He's been running class 5 rapids standing up for more than a decade. Here he is running a waterfall:

* SIGH *

I guess the answer is a resounding "YES IT IS."

Bump for those on board! As a few pointed out the Snyders started doing this stuff on some hard stuff (whitewater) in WV/ Maryland many years ago (20?). I suppose its been around in some form for some time but not on rivers like today and these guys rock! Visionary. The rumor at the time was that at least Jeff ran too many waterfalls in a kayak and his back was not up to his skill? So he started standing in a "ducky"? It turned alot of heads in the south.

Good stuff!

I kayak with Jeff Synder's brother fairly frequently... but I still don't buy into the stand up thing. And Jim is still a sit-down kind of paddler himself.

Yes SLR,

I don't know them personally. I've seen Jeff I guess on the upper but it was along time ago. As a 19 yr old they were gods. Jim was actually on NPR for Friends of the Cheat today.

Cheers!
