Here're a couple of pics some new German friends sent me while my little brother and I were jamming in his Westy on our latest JT climbing trip:

This group of guys who've variously played together in different bands absolutely tore it up yesterday at a little venue in Snohomish, WA.
L-R: Michael Kilby (from Squamish), Nick Dumas (local multi-instrumentalist), Connor Hutteball (local bass player), and Chris Luquette (winner of IBMA award for best bluegrass guitar, and guitar player for Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen--Grammy nominees for best bluegrass band).
Really incredible for such young guys!

Scored some last-minute front row seats for the Punch Brothers a couple of weeks ago. Mind-blowing stuff, but especially at that range. There's just so much nuance and detail going on.i know it's not bluegrass, but still...

Gnome - that's a pretty decent example of what Chris Luquette can do. The guy is incredible.

This isn't bluegrass but here is the ancestor of the banjo. In Mali they call it ngoni, in Gambia it is called banjar.
This is a family band, Basekou Kouyate's brothers and cousins are the other musicians, his wife is the singer. They are griots of the ngoni. Awesome live band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2vQAmySTfw

Chief: sat around with my mando instructor, Nick Dumas, and (on guitar) Mike Kilby yesterday, and played Gold Rush with them. Mike was saying great things about your playing--and your guitar collection. Just thought I'd pass that on. Cheers, Tom Patterson.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the update.
Nick and The North Country gang are some of the most exciting musicians in the NW bluegrass scene these days.
Young Michael Kilby is from another planet and it's not inappropriate to describe him as a multi instrument prodigy and wunderkind.
I've had the privilege of knowing and jamming with Michael and his Dad Richard for a few years now and every time I hear Michael play, he's ratcheted up to another level.
The only reason any of us get to play with him is because he can't play all the other instruments at the same time……yet.
Michael, Richard and I did have the thrill of opening for John Reischman and the Jaybirds a few months back.
Terrifying and fun!
Rumors of my having a collection are greatly exaggerated.
When the sickness was real bad I did have 3 or 4 herringbones at the same time.
Now I just have the 37 herringbone and a D45 Authentic both alluded to upthread.
Nice guitars.

He is amazing, that's for sure. And so young! I've only seen him on guitar and dobro, but he's fluent on both.
When Nick chimed in that he knew you, too, I asked him if he knew of your climbing history in Squamish. "He climbs, too?" Mike knew all about it, but it was a surprise to Nick.
Anyway, yeah...that whole crew of multi-instrumentalists kind of blows my mind. I play mando, bouzouki, guitar, 5-string, and bass...and all with a profound level of mediocrity.

Mooser,
Looking forward to meeting and playing a few tunes.
Be sure to call next time you're up in Squamish.

To anyone in the greater Seattle area: here's a great band playing at pizza joint, no less, and it's this Thursday night at 6:00. I'm going, if anyone wants to join me.
