Ken,

I am referring to your initial post on this thread.Second Paragraph
" I differ with the earlier poster that age doesn't matter. Experience matters and age contributes to that. Strength Matters and what a 17 year old boy can do may not be possible by a 16 year old girl. Its a matter of strength giving an extra margin of safety to do things. 16 year olds typically think what could go wrong?"

Ken no question that experience plays a role but as I along with several others have noted even the most experienced and strong have faced similar situations and some write books about it. I read that Abby is thinking of just doing that and you know what a lot of the skeptics will buy it. Up there at Westlake Village at the Westlake Yacht club, my guess is there is some division about this as well but they sure dont mind making it known that they supported Zac and his effort. You said that you were not in support of Zacs adventure either. I can understand that but, and keep in mind this is just my own impression that you seem to think that just because a person is younger and may not have as much experience as you or someone else that is older and that they may have the means and resources to take on something like this that they dont belong on the ocean.

As you are aware that in the many of the Solo racing events it is required for participants to complete X number of miles for qualification. However when it comes to adventure seekers no requirements are needed and many people strike out on their own with what could be described as minimal experience and do just fine. Steve Fossett was an experienced sailor, aviator etc. and a true thrill seeker and he bought the farm doing something he was very experienced at.

All I am saying is we can have an opinion but who are we to be Judge and Jury.

From the LA Times:

Long before Abby Sunderland set sail on her around-the-world attempt in January, Sunderland was approached by Magnetic Entertainment about the possibility of a reality show, he said. His wife, Marianne, was against it, he said, but they eventually agreed a show focusing on "inspiring kids doing inspirational things” was a story that needed to be told.

Sunderland's son, Zac, became the youngest person to sail around the world at age 17.

Magnetic did some initial filming but could not sell the show, said Sunderland, a shipbuilder. He also had a falling out with the partners over the angle they wanted to take, he said.

“They were assuming Abigail was going to die out there,” he said. “They were relying on her dying, and so we cut the ties.”

Ahem...

"(May 15) -- A 16-year-old Australian girl sailed into a harbor of well-wishers in Sydney today after sailing solo around the world alone and unassisted in a voyage that took 210 days.

Jessica Watson believed to be the youngest person ever to complete such a solo voyage, but her achievement won't yet go into the record books because of questions about her route and age. Some critics also said the journey was too dangerous for someone so young. "

So Russ, when you say:
"I can understand that but, and keep in mind this is just my own impression that you seem to think that just because a person is younger and may not have as much experience as you or someone else that is older and that they may have the means and resources to take on something like this that they dont belong on the ocean."

That is NOT what I say. I say that children do not belong on highly dangerous long distance ocean voyages with no backup, for the purpose of setting records, without a wealth of experience that cannot generally be experienced in the short life of a 16 year old.

Are you saying that a 16 y/o who has never climbed but on top ropes, should attempt a free solo of the Nose?

Are you saying that a 16 y/o should attempt to set the "youngest" survival record for jumping out of an airplane without having a parachute on?

These parental perversions that are created for the purpose of enriching or enfaming (?) a family, at the cost of endangering, in a very real way, the lives of their children......just shaking my head.

A number of posters have stated that if a person were 18, they could make their own choices, so what is the difference? Well, the child is not 18, is the difference. As someone pointed out, a line has to be drawn someplace....why not at the age of consent?

In addiction medicine, the parents are known as co-enablers....you know, the parents that want you to stop the kid from drinking, but buy the kid the alcohol.

Even now, the parents do not seem to appreciate how close they came to losing their daughter.

426, Jessica Watson did not attempt to do the Southern Ocean at a time when experienced expert adult sailors consider it near suicidal to attempt.

Jessica was also lucky.

But it comes back to the same thing. What odds of death are you willing to accept for a child *that you are supposed to be responsible for*?

Sure-I can get you there but you have to make a choice between Madagascar, Kerguelen or Reunion.

Now the good thing is French is the common denominator of all three. The bad thing is neither of these have ever pulled off a successful HALO drop, but I am sure they would be willing to accommodate you in an attempt.

Oh and I almost forgot, Kerguelen lacks a plane or a Coast Guard, Madagascar can be a little rough at times and maintenance is pretty low on the list and Reunion? Well, I don't know if you have ever been around a group of French Commandos, but they can be a little difficult.

As for a Reality Show-I'm sure your adventure will easily slip into the theme of something out there so no need to reinvent the wheel.

Good luck.

Oh yes, forgot to ask, have you ever jumped with a parachute before? Minor detail considering the task at hand.

Motocross season?

What exactly is "motocross season"?

Are you talking Trans World, Pro-circuit, Club racing, Amateur, AMA Pro,
Supercross, Outdoor or National?

Stick to football.

Is it not marvelous on ST how we can deviate off topic? Or is all this relevant?

In an era where thousands of girls under the age of 16 are getting breast enhancements, (with parental consent), guns are routinely discovered in high school lockers and who know what the next drug of choice will be on the social acceptance scale?

Isn't it just a bit refreshing to learn of a young lady with the desire, passion and guts to pursue a dream. Forget the media, the parents and all the hype, listen to Abby and see what she has to say. This is one tough and courageous young lady to have even considered this voyage. I myself have the utmost respect for her.

Would I venture into the Indian Ocean in late fall? No, but then again I would probably be a little reluctant to venture there even in the "good" season.
