"My love is still there, I've made it to 62, so fook it."
And you still have the helmet? Forget the one you had and get you a modern one. They're "light."
I'd like to see us go try this South County jive some early-morn when it's cool still, and shady. I was by there and it's totally dry now, no water left along Preston Rd., I bet.
I'll be wearing no hat bouldering and TRing in the shade. It's not granite, (but the rocks throw just like it, as they usually will) but are some sedimentary varieties, like the samples of stone lying about.
This six-hour trip to Mariposa and back happened on May 22, if you care.

You're right about the weight of my old helmet Mouseau....those old Wehrmacht lids were cumbersome. Good neck protection though.

Maybe we can get us some Roman helmets and go chasing around on Ben Hur Road.
But before we tour a little of Ben Hur, here is the climbing content.
Ben Hur is full of potholes for much of the way into Mariposa, but the road only serves a portion of the county devoted mostly to cattle in the southern end, so it gets little upkeep due to minimal traffic. It is narrow for much of the way, a good reason to DS & RL.
REMEMBER, if you wish to check any of these spots for bouldering: There are land owners involved in this whole stretch of road. Please try to seek their permission to be on their land, number one, and make it known you intend to do some bouldering, number two.
And please pick up any litter you encounter. There wasn't much, besides beer cans and McD's refuse (!).
I highly recommend this backroads touring as one way to get out and do something on foggy San Joaquin days. I used to do it all the time BITD when I had a VW. You can get above the clouds and warm up some.
It is an excellent side trip on the way to Yosemite, as is White Rock Road, further north, which goes through the old mining town of Bridgeport and connects to Highway 140 below Mariposa via Agua Fria Road. It's shorter, and you can begin either of these by simply driving to Le Grand from Merced or Madera.
The winter provides huge flocks of doves, not to mention a few deer, but mostly up higher for them pests. They are garden terrorists in dry years, believe me. I saw on this drive some ducks, hawks, an owl, a turkey, and a coyote loping off, only a few of which I bothered to photograph. The coyote was just playing and I just watched.

This is a shot of Jim and Maureen Shirley taken sometime early in their relationship, not sure when. Jim is my main old time climbing partner and my best man when I married Liz. He's the picture provider for lots of my posts.
They are the parents of twins, Catherine and Mary, age 16.

this sign was on the west end of town on Hwy. 99, just before the "Bear Creek Bridges" for the highway and the railroad.
The getaway to Yosemitay.
Which is what I'm a-gonna do.
Throwpie, I have an address emergency. I lost most of my addresses and phone numbers. (Temporary, I hope. Have you seen a yellow spiral tablet, 3 x 5, anyone?)
If you'll kindly post them to me via email, Pie, I'll be one part back, and maybe I can come visit soon. Would Thursday be OK, or not OK?
It's the second time in two weeks the thing's gone missing.

Yeah, Brown is now recognized by the establishment. I don't know what year this happened or when he made these comments...
Joe's in his eighties and still hitting it.

I believe I posted this earlier, here, proving that twisted minds think not at all alike but come to the same concussians. Russians. Speed climbing contests.
Really, about the same time as I was realizing how the history worked in earlier climbing, Joe and Whillans were just past their prime and conswquently not "headline material" for Mountain, who chose to write about how the Russkies were promoting climbing on winches up a cliff for TIME! How untraditional can you get? Joe would've laughed his ass off at them, both the editors and the Russkies.
Now it's come full circle. We are idolators of NIAD and "Dream Teams." The seconds are gonna win these duels in the sun; and, too, the leaders will always "fall," someday maybe for reals.
Meantime, do you want to go to Tom's Thumb? It's gonna be a happy toprope party (me, THocking, and maybe Ronola) with Fizzies. We'll be heading there about the 22nd, and hopefully Ron A. will make it. Sounds like you will be busy with family, though.

A flying trip to the Valley to ask Tom Evans to help with my camera settings, which he did. Many thanks to the old pro.
While I was taking some shots of a Trifolian above me, Merry joined me for a pipe.
I spent some time over near one of my favorite spots along the river beneath Lower Brother, at the intersection of 'Positive Place' and 'Positively 4th St.'
Lilabiene knows the spot: she spent part of her first day in the Valley cleaning it up!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WvtYgPKlw0
I spent lots of time watching the river flow. The river does nothing fast, at least in this state, yet it does everything eventually.
