Maybe Chiloe or Ed can explain this discrepancy.
probably not, we'd have to know how the 1997 value was calculated, in particular, it's an absolute temperature statement, not an anomaly.
Without knowing the precise manner in which the 1997 absolute value is calculated, it is not comparable to the simple calculation:
57.0 + 1.24 = 58.24

It's 1968 all over again.
The battle to feed all of humanity is over. In the 1970s hundreds of millions of people will starve to death in spite of any crash programs embarked upon now. At this late date nothing can prevent a substantial increase in the world death rate
Global population has double since 1968.
Here's a link showing how global hunger rates have declined over the last 25 years.

Our man Soon:
About the Heritage Foundation, from their website:
Founded in 1973, The Heritage Foundation is a research and educational institution—a think tank—whose mission is to formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.
In other words, a right-wing think tank.

The Population Bomb. I see, it's a book written by a Stanford prof.
Certainly interesting.
The Ehrlichs stand by the basic ideas in the book, stating in 2009 that "perhaps the most serious flaw in The Bomb was that it was much too optimistic about the future" and believe that it achieved their goals because "it alerted people to the importance of environmental issues and brought human numbers into the debate on the human future."
BTW, what enables us to produce so much grain?

Sketch, could it possibly be that grain production goes up because of the demand from an increasing population?
Naw, that can't possibly be it.

Farmers continue to deny there is anything wrong with the climate
and again have record harvests.
The Warmests concede they have failed in tweeking their scare tactic message about climate disaster in a way to trick farmers into not planting
crops. "It is our only hope now to cause a disaster", they say because the
actual climate is getting better for food production with increased CO2.

You climate change terrorists will fail in the effort to extort money
from us honest citizens.
Why? Because we don't make deals with terrorists.

How could yields steadily increase during the 'pause', Sketch?

good one!
this from the 'honest citizen' who posts BS quotes and attributes them to "They."
Farmers continue to deny there is anything wrong with the climate
and again have record harvests.
Which Farmers?
The Warmests concede they have failed in tweeking their scare tactic message about climate disaster in a way to trick farmers into not planting
crops. "It is our only hope now to cause a disaster", they say ...
Which "Warmests (sic)?"

As opposed to those who have not.
Check out North Texas for an example.

North Texas? Really?
We're talking about worldwide production, which has steadily increased, for at least 20 years... and you bring up North Texas.
Did you know Traverse City, Michigan claims to be the "Cherry Capital of the World"?

Ah, good point EdT. My bad.
Did you know that Castroville claims to be the artichoke capital?
BTW, what has lead to the increase in grain production? Are we getting more per acre now, of just farming more acres?
Think the upward trend will continue?
