so EdwardT you didn't read the article...
you could just say that.

And you might also fess up that you have absolutely no idea what a Confidence Interval is... though if you are in the rick school you'd say you understand it just fine without having to deal with any of those mathematical/statistical ideas.

But I'm sure you're firm in your beliefs about that article, after all, you read about it on the internet.

Gotta go out soon and shovel new snow, but on the cheery side I learned that our 2004 paper "Sea changes ashore" (long one of my favorites) has just been quoted exrensively, and approvingly, by a denialist blogger.

Saying or believing CC is not going to do bad or unpredictable things is just as alarming.

I believe more so.

We have the technology to change things right now.

Peace.

That is fine ,really.DMT ,I respect your opinion.

I ,with a 35 year old degree in Geology, have re enrolled and am taking Environmental Engineering courses at Cornell Co -op Rochester,at 6800.00 a course.

It will take me 2-3 years to achieve a degree.

So when I say"We have the technology to change things right now",I am a true believer in that.

Anything else ,for me ,would counter what I am learning.

It is the next generation that will adapt, mitigate and possibly even solve this, that is truly what I believe.

Our generation is to busy arguing this to Act.

Time will tell, but,I am firmly not in the "It's going to do what it always has " camp.

Again,Peace.

Why not, easier living in the fall of my life.

I love what I do now,but it is time to grow.

A close friend's son Seth, went to WVU for EE,He graduated 4 years ago,he was headhunted and now is making a great salary, works from home and travels in our region, mostly planning brownfield cleanup measures.

He can climb ,ski, bike or whatever he wants to do at any time, something Carpentry just does not afford.

That is why I am chasing a degree in EE.

I am looking to interview a self identified "climate change skeptic" for a graduate school assignment. The idea is to learn about another perspective by discussing these types of questions:

Sample Questions:
1. How would you describe your perspective on climate change?
2. Why do you feel this way?
3. Are there any specific people who have influenced your opinion on this topic?
4. Are there any specific informational sources (news, websites) that have influenced your opinion on this topic?
5. Are there any specific statements about climate change that you find hard to believe? If so, why?
6. Is there anything else you would like to share about this topic?

If anyone is game to help out reply here or send me a message.

Thank you,

Ryan

I've been thinking of the term skeptic as a label for those who disagree with the findings of the majority of climate scientists, and I think the term falls short of a proper classification for the group.

Skeptics include the scientists who read and duplicate the studies of other scientists. WRT climate science, any scientist who tries to duplicate the findings detailed in a report on climate science acts as a "skeptic" in that they are working to disprove the study. When a study is reproduced, one or more times, it solidifies the finding of that report and we edge towards saying the report's findings are "fact."

While it is difficult to know things for certain, we can look at each scientific study and hold a degree of confidence that the study is factual. It almost goes without saying, the more a study is reproduced with the same results as the original study, the more we can count on that study as being factual.

Those who don't believe the findings of the IPCC (and other climate science reports that show the Earth is warming and that our human actions are the main cause) are not skeptics, they are deniers. They deny the findings that are reproduced by skilled scientists.

EdwardT would like to claim he is a "skeptic," when in fact he does not have the capability to be an actual skeptic--real skeptics have the ability to show why they are skeptical and offer up a proof that backs up their skepticism.

On the other hand, a "climate change denier" is one who flat out disagrees with the scientific findings of climate scientists.

In the same sense, I am a "believer" in that I believe the findings, but I don't have the ability to reproduce the studies. Instead I must rely on the scientific community to carry that heavy load. Unlike the deniers, I do not believe that the collective group of international climate scientists have been trying to pull the wool over my eyes for decades.

So EdwardT, you can try to sugarcoat the fact that you don't agree with the climate science community by calling yourself a "skeptic." The reality is that you are a denier. And that is not an insult (or an accusation), it's just the truth. So be proud and own your denialism. It is your right to have an opinion. But I will say, it certainly helps to be aware of how you came to your beliefs.

Well Kelly, reproduction of the results is the accepted way of the skeptic. However, with those like Mike Mann who steasfastly refuse FOIA requests for his data, claiming the deniers are just out to discredit him, it makes it a little difficult, but possible with efforts like those of McIntire and McKittrick. Sadly, this pattern of hiding the data and methods is too often repeated by the professional practitioners of this dismal science.

rick, I hear what you are saying. But the case of Mike Mann is just one small point on a very large set of reports, with the vast majority of the reports agreeing with the general direction of our climate, and the root cause.

Agreement of results is hardly surprising, Kelly, what with yearly expenditures of multi tens of billions of dollars lavished on an industry charged with finding and validating the original assumption of AGW.

I see rick. My POV is that international groups of scientists are not trying to dupe me.

While I admire the skeptics who try to disprove studies, I also appreciate the findings of those who do duplicate the studies.

What he said is not about labeling people, but for people to understand why they have come to the conclusions they have. He's a drawing a distinction between skeptic and denier.
