I haven't read the article yet, but as soon as I can steal Rons copy I will. I would like to echo chairman meows (James Tucker)feeling though. Amen James! It was truly inspiring to watch you, Jeff, battle your way up that wall. Watching the video shows just how hard you had to fight for every foot of vertical gain. Thanks for the opportunity to experience such a thing.
Steve

Thanks for that Steve.
To the rest of you, speaking of falls, Steve and I went out shooting yesterday but we had barely set up before Steve's phone rang.
The ambulance was in front of his home. His newborn had taken a header out of his thingamajig.
After a thorough exam (including catscan!) it appears that the damage was not all that serious.
Mazel tov. Long life.

Ekat...that was a great movie...filmed in Santa Fe my freshman year . The scenes of the Plaza are great. I think the kid is being dish out the window of the old Plaza Diner.
Santa Fe was wonderful back then.
Radical..get the movie and enjoy it. Billy Jack is a wolf in Hippie clothing. Quite a bad ass.

Jeff, you and I have never met, but your encouraging words on this thread were read to me last August when I was in the ICU. To have a world-class climber wishing me well when I (a nobody) was weak, half-paralyzed, helpless and facing a long recovery meant a lot.
I cannot recall the last time I read or subscribed to Outside magazine, but if I did have a subscription I would cancel it.
btw I have a well-thumbed copy of Ice World on my shelf.

So,
I've drifted in and out of this thread, and I seem to remember the original subject was Outdoor Mag, and some "Reportedly" slanderous material written by J's "Friend". We'll here is my .02...... I don't read that stuff (Outside), and Jeff has been a true inspiration to me.
No worries mate.

BA:"that was a great movie...filmed in Santa Fe my freshman year"
thought the movie was shot in Prescott, no? Pretty sure the scene where BJ wallops fat, bigshot townie in the face with his foot from like a a few inches away was filmed in town square right across from Whisky Row.

I read the article. I assume some inaccuracies, some quotes far
removed from their context.
I think if I were in Jeff's shoes, I would much prefer that the
piece had been written by a professional stranger, so I could be
pissed off about the author's words but chalk it up to heartless
journalism.
But as it is...

Jeff. Hello; I was down in Palm Desert today, and I went to Borders and got the Outside Magazine. I know Pete too and have climbed with him here and there. Dark drama sells. Pete (As well as us all) have our own dragons to slay. Good thing you are a mellow fellow. I believe your true friends and family will easily sort through this article, and already have. As for climbers like myself who are familiar with your climbing side, but not the "people magazine" side of you;.....I remember looking up at the head of Moses in Canyonlands and thought to myself;......I think Jeff Lowe and Kathryn Destiville did a new route up that face;.......OUTRAGEOUS! (That is the sort of stuff that stays with me......) I try to live my life one day at a time;...and one moment at a time;....it's really sort of all we have;...(Our children teach us this quite well!)..looking back over time at our lives, especially our struggles,....yeah;...it's creepy......you are one of the reasons I like supertopo so much;......I find your outlook on life and your take on things facinating, useful, and refreshing. I know you will be able to sort through the B. S. from this article, and I'm sure conversations, perceptions, reassurances, and support for the real Jeff that comes from this article will find some mystical way to help bring you closer to your loved ones;......I hope so.........It will be challenging;........your resume speaks well of your willingness to accept challenges. Pete had a tough assignment to write such an article;....got to give him credit for grabbing that tiger by the tail.......(Pete is another one to accept big challenges with vim and vigor....). Bravo to your credo to be forgiving, positive, and grounded in what you consider reality.......Our struggles in life continue......we can count on that;.......I believe you will continue to slay the dragons with the sword of mellowness, kindness, forgiveness, patience, and understanding. Thank you for your inspiration and positive influence you have had for me in my life.
Here's a picture of me on Thumbelina (5.11) on Bridger Jack formation in Indian Creek. I did this climb with Pete;...he took this photo. We had a great time;...Pete led the whole climb, and got the crux with no falls or hangs.....he's a talented climber and writer, and a good guy and friend.

Outside magazine is to authentic adventuring what a wave tank is to big wave surfing.
The only person who takes seriously the spray in such a rag has never had intimacy struggles or failed relationships, has never told a lie, has never had issues with money, fame or fate, never bailed off a route and hence, was never born.

Finally got around to reading it. I suscribe, but, either it hasn't arrived or my subscription is expired. I usually get something worthwhile out of the magazine. Been a bunch of talented writers over the years. I like the purty pictures. I used to get an email a week from friends in Bozeman bitchin' how it was in their latest top ten list. Got a chuckle out of that.
The article? Hmmm. I didn't much care for it. Had a wierd, kinda negative tone without making much of a point. Strange slant. Left a badly odd taste.
I think Pete is a talented writer. But, the article could have been much better done, methinks. Especially by someone "on the inside". Maybe that's why it didn't work?
Jeff, I've had only brief contact with you over the years, and, its always been such a pleasure. Thanks.
Cheers,
-Brian in SLC

Well Jeff
I guess a one sided feud gets about as far as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest, unless you get it in print.
You would not know me if I walked up and said hi. I also have known you to go out of your way to help someone with no accommodations neither expected nor asked for.
By taking the high road you once again lead by example.
Be well

I did not find much depth or substance in the article.Somewhat suprised that Pete did not try to unvail what Jeff thought of the loose blocks on the 3rd pitch of the NW corner of the Bastile.

Hi Jeff ~
You are an inspiration to a generation of climbers – from both your technical ascents and cool design ideas. Much of what is being done today is a result of your vision. For this we are very grateful.
Perhaps you will be invited to write about your life in Alpinist. You could fill many pages with your experiences.
This is the Tuallarju climb, the sweeping arête, that you and Alex “no relation” Lowe climbed in the 80s.
It was one of Alex’s favorite climbs. He cherished the memory of the climb.
Alex and Jenni riding donkeys in BC – nice Latok sweater, eh!
Meru, Garwhal Himal The central pillar is still unclimbed!
You’re very strong.
