Good odds for next week. The road is done, but olmstead has to melt/blast out.
There likely won't be any services either as the power has been off since January and they don't really know why- at last word of course.

Yes, I just found out it's still closed on the Cal Trans website.
I guess that is the only option. Or I could go further up to 50. Road trip!
Thanks, T*r :)

Now I am hearing rumors that the pass will stay closed through July..??!!
Due to power cable damage under Ellery Lake?
But 108 is supposed to open next weekend?
Anyone have more info?
?
Thanks!

Sure is interesting how the transition seasons, spring and fall, have weather that lingers.
Right now we're feeling inertia like a hangover from winter. Snow flurries, wind, full-on little blizzards, slip-slidin' the ice over Carson Pass -- all when our expectations, looking ahead, grab shorts and a t-shirt, keep saying it ought to be pushing 80 degrees and starting to sweat.
Then deep into the fall, Halloween and even November, when our hearts have turned to snow, instead we get sweltering days saturated with placid air ...

Good chance of snow through Friday in Lee Vining.
Chance of snow with lows in the 20's at Tioga Pass through Friday.
Hold on while I toss another log on my wood stove here in the Santa Cruz mtns.
Going on a big group "family camp" with about 40 adults and 60 little ones on the edge of Grant Grove this weekend. Good chance of rain mixed with snow through Friday. Gonna be a lot of cold wet little ones around the big stone fireplace Friday night. Hot chocolate, blankets and songs will do the trick. The Friday night wine bash under the stars at the campfire circle might be shortened.
So much for my annual hike up the ridge behind Grant Village. Should I take my skis? Decisions decisions.
Tioga Pass?
My guess is June 10.

power is out in tm and has been out all winter. rumor is that it is busted under ellery lake as the lines go underground from ellery to tm.
the sewer ponds can not be pumped until they get power. they can not use the spray field until the snow is gone.
the road is plowed and nps is driving up an down

I hear they decide one way or the other tomorrow. Maybe this weekend, but there is quite a bit going against this weekend between the avalanche danger, the cold temps and no power. No power, means no water, which means no bathroom, which means feces and urine right off the road.

Didn't a foot of snow fall up there on Sunday ? And there is more to come today & Wednesday.
http://www.monolake.org/today/2010/05/23/update-lower-tioga-road-gate-temporarily-closed/
With 12 inches of new snow at Tioga Pass from last night’s late-season snowstorm, the lower gate on Highway 120 West has been closed temporarily. Visitors can drive only four miles west of Highway 395 on the Tioga Road before reaching the closed gate.

We are starting a bicycle tour in San Diego on June 4th and expect to be at Tioga Pass about June 15th give or take a few days. Anyone care to suggest an alternate route in case Tioga Pass Road isn't open? My currently planned route is this.
Also, anyone care to guess the odds whether the pass will be open to bicycles when we get there?

IF you look at the average difference between Glaicer Point road opening dates and Tioga since 2005 (as shown on the nps website) you find the average difference is 19 days. With Glaicer Point scheduled to open on the 28th, then the 15 of june is reasonable guess for an opening date of tioga....
