Sometime back in the 1980's Donald Katz wrote an amazing short story in Outside magazine called "The King of the Ferretleggers", which purported to be a true expose of the old English art of Ferretlegging, and it's master, Reg Mellor. Any climber OWES it to oneself to find this on the web and to read it. Anyway, my whole life has involved the figurative insertion of hungry ferrets into my pants to see how long I could stand it, so "ferretlegger" seemed an appropriate moniker. In the final paragraph, Reg Mellor describes what I perceive to be my whole philosophy of life summed up in a single pithy sentence:

But Reg Mellor refuses to acknowledge that his talent is made of the stuff of heroes, of a mixture of indomitable pride, courage, concentration, and artless grace. "Naw noon o' that," said the king. "You just got be able ta have your tool bitten and not care."

Pretty much sums it up for most of us old farts, doesn't it?

its my name. I also have a couple other names elsewhere although the latest is armygirl. I heard "re-TARD" alot for a couple months but that was more a collective name than individual.

goat started in little league football because I liked to rouse the other team players and try and get there goat or a least make them angry which made for better football, this eventually turned to goatboy.

Fast forward to '90 or '91 when I was living in NYC. A partner and I were buildering around on the big retaining walls in Riverside Park where someone had spray painted goatboysmellz on the wall just below this cool finger crack we were climbing. Being that I worked as a bike messenger all week then up to the Gunk’s every weekend I didn't always have a chance for a shower when I needed one therefore I created an odor that my friend mentioned I would have to soak in kerosene to ever get the stink off, this was the start and I thought the end of the goatboy smellz nickname.

Fast forward to 2006 and I wanted to respond to said friend who posts here to retort a story he was blabbering on about and getting a few details incorrect...so I tried goat and it was taken, then I tried goatboy and it was also taken, so I reach way back to goatboy smellz and surprise, surprise it was available.

I first signed on here while rehabbing from shoulder surgery (SLAP tear) a couple years ago, and I really was hurtin'. Even so, after 30+ years of climbing, and a host of other physical pursuits, it seems I'm ALWAYS hurtin somewhere. It's like there's a pain in side me that just bounces around and it gets more INTENSE as I get older.

Great thread, you guys are a hoot!

Hey all you Idahoheads out there! I may in the minority being from the northern part of Idaho, on the shores of the shadowy St. Joe River, but I have lived (for a short time during my vagabond years) in Boise, Twin Falls, Moscow and many other small Idaho towns working various and sundry farmgirl jobs. I'll be back west of the Mississippi River for the majority of the summer this year, and I'll be in the Tetons for three weeks. Yeah!

Yo spud, I'm in north idaho too. Bout 25 miles from the canadian border right now. Also, are you the tractor girl the route in that riggins cave is named after? As in, you humped the drill up there day after day? that's the way i heard the story anyway...

i got my handle from my buddy when i started kiteboarding. i pretty much wouldn't commit to anything that took me more than 15 minutes from the beach, because kiting is like surfing and riding pow, you gotta be there when it's good, not when it's convenient.

so after bailing on him from the golf course on like the 4th hole (again), he's all:

"fine, go f*#king blowboarding again.."

and it hasn't stopped.

sometimes i post as drater too. not on here tho.

at least i think not...

I didn't read all 200 previous posts, but I don't think I chimed in before. Apologies for redundancy.

Here's my story:

Mom liked Melissa. Dad liked Danielle. Melissa Danielle had better metter than the converse, so mom got the first name and dad got the functional name. But when I became a student/professional name on a paper it was too complicated to be a M. Danielle. So I'm Melissa D.

Everytime I meet someone who says "Are you Melissa from Supertopo" I have to do my pennance in embarrassment for every stupid thing I've ever said here.

Hi north Idahoans! I don’t know many climbers from the panhandle but my brother married a girl from Bonner’s Ferry.

Hi Lynne, nice to read your posts on Supertopo. Yes, I think I’m the Jennie Dirtineye is writing (well or ill) of. Yes, feel free to email me anytime.

Tradman was something I came up with before I was even computer literate in a short story that I hacked out on a typerwriter. Tradman was a cross between largo's liveing large and Ed Angers My America collum in the World Weekly News. When I first started posting on Neice as Tradman I stayed in charecter for awhile but the internet is a rough place and it didn't take too long for me to figuer out that Tradmans rants attracted agressive responses.. Ocasionaly I do slip back into a good Tradman rant though.. "There I was elbow deep in a nice OW crack down to my last 12 pack of PBRs when allong comes this driveling top roper, Now let me tell you, this punk was uglier than a clear plastic bacg full of smashed bleeding as#@&%es and weaker than the tail end of a tequila hangover..... anyways Tradman must have been taken so tradmanclimbs it was......

I was building a boat called a Tolman skiff, and there is a yahoo group for builders of that boat. When I started my yahoo e-mail I put in tolman_paul, tolman for the boat, paul is my first name. I used that e-mail account to set up my supertaco acct, and hence, tolman_paul.

BTW, here's the completed boat.
