i'm with climbski2, i believe ammon is bad at basejumping. when he does not get busted, he gets busted up. spent some time going to visit him and talk him out of basejumping a few years ago, after he nearly lost his leg. he should have listened to me, he would still have his freaking leg still.

all you people that say go for it, live it up dude...don't really care for him as i do, as a friend. i'm not saying to quit climbing, just quit base jumping. fact is, i don't have many friends to tell to stop base jumping because most of them have already freaking died. we should be confiscating his chute at this point.

^^^ I hear ya, Steve. I'm his friend too, and we've had this conversation. To me, there's a tension between "being careful" (whatever that means in any given context) and that Braveheart quote that I do believe: Every man dies; not every man really lives.

Base jumping is roulette, no doubt. Where's the line to be drawn. I draw my own lines, but far be it from me to draw the lines for another. I sure don't know.

Again, I hear ya! Really.

Right on, Steve!

Base is not climbing
Base kills climbers

Well hell, I didn’t mean to rehash the old base vs. climbing, debate. I was just letting friends here know that I’m having fun and loving life, again. It’s been an incredibly tough journey to recovery, to say the least. But, I’m here to tell you I wouldn’t change any of my decisions in any of the sports, I’m involved in.

Some of the most talented jumpers in the world have had accidents and fatalities. That doesn’t mean they suck at it, it’s just the nature of the sport. You either get it, or you don’t.

Just remember most the world thinks we are crazy and possibly suicidal, climbing those “silly” rocks. How would you feel if someone said we need to confiscate your climbing gear? You would probably go free soloing if you didn’t have gear, yeah?

Do I have to make a list of climbing fatalities to prove my point? Most people would call climbing, “russian roulette”, as well. Why don’t we, as climbers? The same reason jumpers don’t view jumping off cliffs with a parachute, as such.

I’m going to stick with activities that inspire me and will never let the fear of death cripple my full potential... even if it cripples me. ;)

See you on the rock!

I for one would like to see Ammon just live a normal cubicle life, grow old and boring, grow to be scared. It would be the adult thing to do. ;-)

My body will grow old but my spirit will stay young forever.

Btw, I am still very passionate about climbing. Here’s a photo of my partner, Mathew Holt, on the second pitch of an FA (contributing to the DOAM, A2+) we put up, just 4 months after they gave me the chop.

Who’s going for the 2nd ascent?

This makes me happy. An injury like that would take a lot of people into a pit of despair and pain meds that they might never recover from, I'm stoked it didn't happen to the pirate!
