Lois, for years both Canada and the US didn't allow ads for prescription drugs. The two countries drug cost were rising parallel on the graph until the US OKed ads. Then our costs began to climb much steeper.
Script drug ads used to be Illegal. Ads are already restricted for tobacco. If a patient isn't allowed to buy it themselves, they don't need ads for it.
Their patents give them monopolies on this stuff. They have responsibility to hold the costs down because sometimes their crazy expensive drugs are the only treatment. Ads just jack up the cost when the patient has no business deciding whether they need the drug or not anyway.
