Here's that toast to you Ghost........just finished with this porter. Soft cocoa, vanilla bean and horchata notes. Big ABV but not hot.......10.4%.

What beer am I drinking right now?
Forget it, _any_ real beer would be wonderful right now, to wash out the taste of the horrible crap that was on offer at Jim's Latok slide show earlier this evening.
The climbing tales were wonderful. But the store that hosted the event was offering Ranier Beer in cans. We made the mistake of trying it. Yuck.
So the instant we got home, it was straight to the kegs in the cellar... But enough about bad beer. Let's get back to stuff worth drinking.

Much appreciated, and I raise a glass of my own 13% IPA to you (believe me, to erase the memory of that Ranier, I really want something closer to 100%). But your post brings up a question: What, really, is Porter? I'm familiar with its history, but until we have access to time travel, we really can't know what it tasted like back when that history was being written (or brewed).
Of course, there are hundreds of "porters" available now, but every single one I've ever tried made me think I'd just wasted some money on something about which the only thing that could be said was "Well, yeah, it's brown."
I love stouts. The bigger, gnarlier, stronger, blacker, the better.(Just ask Steve Grossman, with whom I regularly share the darkness.) But every time I drink a porter, I am left with the feeling that the brewer brewed it only because... "Well... yeah... we've got a blond and an amber and a pale, so I guess we should have a porter, too." And then put just enough dark malt into some inoffensive ale to be able to label it "Porter."
You, on the other hand, have obviously brewed something more than "brown beer." So talk to me about porter.

I drink cheap beer sometimes but that was bad. I hadn't a Rainier in years had and now I'm glad. We had real German beers after that to wash that out.

We dragged a couple of bottles of skullsplitter up the Old Man of Hoy with us last week- I think this is available in the US. A great small brewery on mainland Orkney, this one has won quite a few prizes

Time to get this back where it belongs -- on the front page.
We were doing some grocery shopping in a part of town we don't often get to, and, once done, I said something about how hot it was, and how a beer would taste pretty good, and Mari replied with a vague memory of reading about a new brewery/taproom somewhere around here...
Fifteen minutes of trying to figure out where we were, and where this new brewery might be relative to the only landmark we were familiar with in the area (another pub), had us wondering if we might as well go home and see what was in the fridge. But then, just as Mari pulled the car over, saying something like "F*#k this. Let's stop and sort this out," I saw the sign...
NW Peaks Brewery and Taproom.
Right! Out of the car, across the street, and up to the bar!
Photos below, but the short version is that a PNW climber (Kevin Klein, I think) started a brewing project a few years ago, eventually winding up with a taproom in Seattle's Ballard district. He did his brewing in space leased here and there from other breweries, but, a year or so ago, jumped in when another small brewery (Spinnaker Bay Brewing) went out of business in another part of the city.
We didn't know anything about all this history, just stumbled into the place more or less by accident. But if you're a Seattle-area climber, and a lover of beer, you owe it to yourself to seek out the NWPeaks brewery and taproom in the Hillman City district. Good beer, good ambiance, good folks...
...and I even did a new route on one of the peaks he's named a beer after!
So. Brewery and taproom is at 5718 Rainier Ave S Seattle. Pretty easy to get to from most places.
The space is really pleasant.

Just about beer-thirty here in Quilcene with some Deschutes Black Butte Porter patiently waiting. Had some of their Obsidian Stout last week in John Day. That was really good. Didn't know they are the 8th biggest craft brewery and 15th biggest overall! I guess big can be good.
BTW, if you come through Quilcene do yerself a favor and eat at the Timber House. Boy, howdy, that was some gud eatin'! Best scallops I've had in yonks. The oysters didn't cut the scallops any slack either!

So what are you doing in Quilcene?
Visiting an old rope mate. He has Parkinson's and makes me look a punter, at least in terms of his attitude and fortitude. Man, talk about an unprotected runout on heinous choss! He's laughing at it. If you saw his property and house you'd switch inna heartbeat.
Kind of a tough neighborhood though as shot last week on his lawn...
Besides, any place with an intersection like this is OK in my book...
Local literary relevance...
