Somebody should start a thread about why they choose to use their real names vs. those who use an avatar. It would be interesting to hear the varying rationales in one place.
Or maybe not.

blah, blah
I did not bother answering your direct question because I felt you as an adult had read through this thread and thus had read Ron Anderson's direct "threat" to Apogee
did I assume wrong, if so go back to the first page and see if you can get up to speed
edit: there have been not one but two threats by Anderson to Apogee
one that while outing his privacy with a picture taken from another source without his permission then threatened to go to his house
a previous threat was to "gut you like a Chinook"
get it yet?

I was being too negative in my posts, hiding behind Ricardo Cabeza, so I switched to my real name to help me maintain some sense of accountability. It worked.

Good words, Cragman.
I have said some pretty harsh things to you. For that, I apologize.

I don't know about others who use an avatar, but I simply chose mine because it's been a 'pet word' for most of my life. It was certainly not chosen as a means by which to hide behind.
Prior to coming to this Forum, I used to be a regular in an industry listserve discussion group where issues of outdoor and adventure education were discussed by professionals from around the world- the tone was academic, respectful, and very articulate. That was my primary conditioning to group forums, and when I came here, I thought the same sort of tone existed.
Ummmm....that was a very naive assumption on my part. Almost instantly, the tone that was directed towards me was pretty harsh. I responded in some pretty childish, defensive ways, and it took a while to 'get the feel' for this place, and adjust my own tone (which obviously continues to need work).
Personally, I just don't know what the relevance is of using one's name....I understand and respect the view of those who believe that this somehow improves personal responsibility and tone of communication, but as Lolli pointed out earlier today, that's definitely not always the case.
Further, there seems to be an assumption amongst some longtime ST regulars who use an avatar that everyone knows who they are...speaking for myself, that's definitely not the case. There are many posters here that seem to be very well-known by others, yet I really have no idea who they are.
The bottom line for me in this forum is that avatar or real name....I'm more interested in what you have to say, and how you say it.

Life is too short to be an angry as#@&%e.
I see some ppl here and they remind me of myself when I hated everyone, most of all myself.
It sucks when you hate yourself so much that you seek out hate and nastiness and strife and you take it out on others and perpetuate these negative feelings until you're surrounded and consumed by it all.
At the end of the day, when there's no one left, who will these people blame then?

Norton, I've yet to see anything that any reasonable person would take "as a serious expression of an intention to inflict bodily harm" made by Ron or anyone else.
If you think you have an example of such a threat, please post it.
If you don't, you don't need to keep replying to my posts (but you can if you want--I won't do anything if you do, I promise! Wouldn't want the FBI alerted!)
We may be at a little bit of a loggerheads as to what a "reasonable" person would think.
Not that I would concede that Apogee is a reasonable person (I don't know him, nor do I have any wish to), but does he really believe that Ron has made a serious expression of harm?
What has he actually done that may substantiate that belief? Notified law enforcement? Locking his doors now, when he used to not? Get an alarm system? Guard dog? Karate lessons?
My own "belief" is that Apogee does not in fact have any fear of Ron, but thinks he's caught Ron committing a crime and plans to use that to intimidate Ron. But who knows--I'm just calling it like I see it.

Leave it to anita, Lollie, Anastasia and SCSeagoat to have the greatest insights. All four of them intelligent and kind women who I've been pleased to tip a beer or glass of wine with.
They're sitting back, watching the schoolyard boys and bullies posturing, kicking sand and threatening to knock a couple of blocks off. And alternately wondering WTF? and laffin' their arses off.
I would not say from what I've seen of Big Mouthing around here that anyone has made a real, legally defined threat.
Very dammed close though. Posting someone's real name against their wishes is definitely out of bounds I've said early on that I think Ron owes apogee an apology. Either that or a duel with blunt broadswords on Owens Lake.
I'm glad Cragman chimed in. He and I have had a couple of polite but diametrically opposed discussions here while others have ranted and abused on the same thread. We've also met in person only twice and we certainly respected and dare I say liked each other. I for one look forward to the next time.
Carry on

Yes, blahblah, I do think Ron demonstrated intent in his reaction to me. It's pretty hard to interpret it otherwise when he posts images here that were obtainable only by searching various sources that have nothing to do with ST.
As long as this quiets down into (yet) another ST dramafest gone beddy-bye, I have no intent to do anything more with it.

I've posted this before, but the whole avatar vs real name thing, for me at least, boils down to what you post. If you want to banter and post silly stories under an assumed name, no one cares. But when you start calling people out on a personal basis while hiding behind an avatar you are just a slimy coward.
On a personal level, I'm in full agreement with what Hank posted above ("If everyone knows it's Hank Caylor: I read, re-read and think more before I post... usually. Keeps me honest.") In all the years I hung out on rec.climbing I was just me, David Harris. When I joined ST I thought that since everyone else had a silly screen name, I should have one too. But I've never hidden my real name, and that does make a difference to what I post.

tradman, if you're still around, I'm interested in hearing more about your rationale about avatar vs. real names. (I posted some of my view on the previous page.)
