My wife and I hit up Tuolumne this weekend with the intention of hiking Clouds Rest from Tenaya Lake Friday and then climbing on Saturday. We made it up Clouds Rest, but the bloodsuckers were the worst I've ever experienced and scared us off day two. I practically showered in DEET and I still have 86 bites (and counting-what appear to be single large bites keep resolving into multiple overlapping bites as the swelling goes down). Full disclosure, this is only my second Tuolumne summer, and we met some other hikers who claimed that the skeeters were't actually that bad yet. Yikes!

The East Arete of Simmons looks pretty fun. Once coming over the Lyell/Maclure saddle from Hutchins Basin, I contoured from below to Amelia Earhart Peak and found it to be an incredibly casual stroll along a gentle ledge that included a stop at "Inkwell Lake." Oddly, there were bear tracks up there.

Given the amount of snow up there, and the weather the next week or two, it looks like the opening all the way thru won't be until the end of May.

This is the way it is just about every year. Why is it going to be any different this year, especially with greater snowfall than last year? There's always busting through the avalanched below Olmsted Point and that's always as slow as molasses in January. When the TM Store and Grill and the Campgrounds are open, then there's a real incentive to open US 120 all the way through. Before that, why?
