And now the returning vets from Afghanistan are covered with blood because Obama DIDN'T KEEP HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISE! And, by the way, he's now had 4 years to so...

I have several friends now serving as "contractors" in Afghanistan. They say we're clearly losing that one and shouldn't be there in the first place. The British tried and failed; the Russians tried and failed; we're trying and failing.

But why are we there, you may ask? It's the fantastic mineral wealth of rare Earth metals: Holmium, Hafnium, Dysporsium; Platinum, etc. Greed conquers all...

Re, the comment on Korea: Truman didn't want to have a ground war in Asia, and thus restricted the U.S. Air Force to refrain from bombing North of the Yalu. He effectively tied MacArthur's hands in his prosecution of the war. Ridgway came in after macArthur was sacked, and fought it to a stalemate after the clandestine incursion of 400,000 Chinese troops that blunted the drive to totally rout the North Koreans. He (Truman) didn't want one, but he GOT a ground war in Asia due to his interference. Thus began the "rules of engagement" follies.

so in other words, you feel that if the US has to fight a war, it should be able to wage war on anybody: a country that is not involved, civilians that are not hostile but in the vicinity. Butcher anything that moves, rape any women, bayonet any children. No rules.

Truman did not want us in a war with China, so chose to order no fighting IN China, MacArther disobeyed him, the f*ck.

But the clearer answer is that you are of the camp that the military should not answer to civilian authority. In fact, if civilian US authority is in the way of military desires, it should be exterminated. No rules.

Welcome to the junta.

And McCain lost. Are they "coming home on schedule?" No; there never has been a clearly published "schedule."

What a damn liar.

You can see what a coward wrote this. His unit gets an order to retreat, there is no orderly retreat, covering and protecting his fellows, its "run as fast as you can", and everyone for themselves.

At least, that is what he expects our gov't to do. No orderly retreat, AS IS HAPPENING. No gradual covering maneuvers.

Just run like a beaten dog.

This is the guy you want to have no rules?

Not to mention the blood of an ambassador and crew.. Not to mention the dead and dying in Libya as multiple factions fight for dominance in a free for all.

How may embassy people died during Bush's admin, that you didn't say a damn word about?

What a fake!

Somehow this has degenerated into another name calling, personal attack smear fest.

And I DON'T care at all for the imputation of anyone's personal cowardice. Take away the anonimity of the internet and you would NOT DARE TO SAY THAT TO THE FACE OF A VETERAN. I promise you, not warn you, that you would NOT like the outcome.

So...I'm leaving this thread because some people have their heads up their a$$es and are behaving as standard Super Topo DICKS!

I agree as well, the thoughts or comments that I said earlier on what I have seen on this thread will be posted on another.

Stay tuned. Will try to get up a few today if time persists.

Dood:

Thought it would be not the right place to comment since this had to with honour and respect.

I’ll be talking about what someone said about pizzing on a Koran. If you think cutting off heads and standing it up with three stakes and then placing those “did it” cards plus killing a child and chopping to get satisfaction in Nam should be on this site you can always change the channel.

Some of the things I will say have nothing to do with what the original post began with. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

Nam was just a chapter in my life, past that, moved on, now past chapter 30 and still playing.

Thanks guyman

2010, should have been written 20 years ago maybe it would have worked. Old news or too late in the game. Of course engagement might be used here after 2013 in a town near you.

Not quite sure why these threads get so nasty. Then again, just about half the population is going to vote for one man and the other half will vote for the other.

Half of the people will think the other half are complete idiots that have been brain washed by religion and how they were raised. Believe, no facts required! This supposedly educated half will continue to believe in evolution and women having a choice. They will continue to say things like "Can't we all just get along" and "As long as they don't force their belief on us".

The other half will continue to be more strident in their beliefs. Yes, many are highly educated and speak eloquently about their beliefs and how people should join in on believing (this core belief that drives many religions scares me). The more fundamental elements of this group will always be breaking off and trending to extremist actions when they believe their core beliefs are being watered down or changed.

My biggest fears are that sooner or later we won't agree on anything or one extremist from within will get a hold of a nuclear weapon........

Total chaos and the breaking apart of a country.

I know which side I'm on. Shall we start shooting now?

Depressing but probably true. Any chance we can do better for our children?

Dude...who knows what goes on in your head?

As to service...my number was 17, I register, did my physical and was in my second year of college. The draft ended. Pretty simple.

labrat...nice post...the country is divided, it is also been controlled by a certain group...(whites males)...that is also changing. Our kids don't look at the US or the world they way we did. Should be interesting in the next 10-20 years to see how the country changes.

Chief...The only reason the military gets any recruits is because there are no jobs in the private sector.....It's pretty easy to turn an impressionable 18 year old into a homicidal maniac under the guise of heroism and patriotic duty...Not dissing your service to our country but discretion is the better part of valor...RJ

Chief...it's the economy stupid.

When the economy slackens and unemployment rises and jobs become more scarce in civilian society, recruiting is less challenging,” said Curtis Gilroy, the director of accession policy for the Department of Defense.

Still, the economy alone does not account for the military’s success in attracting more recruits. The recent decline in violence in Iraq has “also had a positive effect,” Dr. Gilroy said.

Another lure is the new G. I. Bill, which will significantly expand education benefits. Beginning this August, service members who spend at least three years on active duty can attend any public college at government expense or apply the payment toward tuition at a private university. No data exist yet, but there has traditionally been a strong link between increased education benefits and new enlistments.

The Army and Marine Corps have also added more recruiters to offices around the country in the past few years, increased bonuses and capitalized on an expensive marketing campaign.

The Army has managed to meet its goals each year since 2006, but not without difficulty.

As casualties in Iraq mounted, the Army began luring new soldiers by increasing signing bonuses for recruits and accepting a greater number of people who had medical and criminal histories, who scored low on entrance exams and who failed to graduate from high school.

It's the only profession left where Duty, Honor, Integrity and Commitment have any value assigned to them, even if now diminished by "political correctness".

Those values are offensive to some.

Particularly "progressives".
