Cowabunga. What's SUUUUUUUUUUP?

Last summer took lessons.

Then this summer I bought a WaveStorm SUP at CostCo (yes I can hear the moans and groans just now) before school let out and this whole last month I've been hitting the Bay with lots of flatwater, also riding water skier wakes, and also getting out in the open ocean in the waves, lots of waves. It's a great time. Good value for getting into the sport.

Later I'll get a more expensive board.

Anyway, it's a great platform for snorkelling and cruising around too. Pretty cool on a flat day to SUP and see all the rays and Leopard sharks in La Jolla preserve swim below you and be able to see them crystal clear while SUPing. You just don't get that perspective much when sitting waiting for a wave on a regular board.

Dang board seems to do everything:

all those years of surfing [shortboards] muttering under my breath to the loggers "might as well get a paddle for that boat" and those f#ckers eventually did

Never tried it. I imagine if I lived walking distance to the water, I'd do it for a near-daily exercise and reason to get out on the water more often, though. For now, "go home kooks!" =)

Hey wutevha, you wanna be surf stars either get it or not.

On flat days go sailing, go paddling, go fishing or skiing behind a motorboat,
beats sitting around on the lawn chairs any day.

What else you gonna do when you're surrounded by water?

I tried SUP last week for the first time. Cruising around Lake Tahoe sounds boring to me, but with changing scenery, a few rapids, it's pretty cool. Nice to see what's coming up in the next river rapid (vs. kayaking), nice perspective to look down into the water, and after a while there is a sort of zen-like trance to be relaxed on your feet as you flow along with nature rolling by beside you. It's nice to toggle between sitting, kneeling, and standing when going through long stretches of paddling into the wind. My perspective is mostly from using an inflatable kayak. You can brace your lower calves a bit against the sides of the thing to handle more rapids or waves than you would otherwise be ready for on a plain SUP board.

If I was in the market to purchase, I would DEFINITELY get an inflatable kayak rather than a hard SUP board. Much more versatile and portable, and in my limited experience, more fun.

I love to be able to do all that. Mixes it up: Sitting, sitting on your ankles, kneeling, and then standing, so the legs don't wear out.

On a SUP you can handle big waves and rapids if you're good. You have to go and watch really good SUPers at the beach. Anyone out there cutting up the waves on a SUP comes from a strong surfing background. They catch the wave way out on the outside and ride it in all the way to nearly ankle deep water and then paddle back out, often while standing the whole time. They take on the waves going back out straight into them. Me too. I'm getting better at it. It's amazing how big of a wave some of these guys paddle straight into while going out and they don't get knocked over. It's all about balance and being aggressive. It's pretty amazing.

Tried ONCE about a month ago...

Sorry but I just don't get it.
Seems way lame to me, except for the chicks.

Kind'a like early 80's, 'Saturday night fever, disco dancing' !
The only reason to don double knit polyester was for the chicks.

I just think it's absurd.
And where's the beer can holder?

I'd rather sit and paddle a kayak or row an Alden ocean shell.

Trudle, I agree paddling flat water is lame and boring
However once you get out and surf downwinds for miles or a local break it's a whole nother game.

if you are new to surfing you will probably poo poo the whole idea but if you're an old hand you will see the benefits and how to ride all the different conditions. From ankle biters to big waves, you can learn a lot from those long boards and a spanking paddle.

Only rookies dis paddleboarding.

Standing wave in a river = the endless ride

Pretty darn cool.

Now I suppose after a ride of 60 minutes or so it might get boring. But you would have a really big smile on your face.
