on a snowboard, once you manage to stay off your duff, you automatically look cool. snowboarding is about how you look. skiing is about what you do. that's it.
Ive never been on a pair of ski's, mostly cause it looks soooooo gay.
Some definite truth there. Snowboarders often say it's all about "style". I guess that makes skiing about....
Substance
This year I'll probably do about 1/2 and 1/2. When I go out with my bros and charge I ski. When I got out with the family I'll ride. Both are very fun and 98% the same.
I still prefer skis slightly though because: snowboarding is a pain, it sucks to traverse, you can't skate to get around, you have to buckle in and out, it feels less natural, its feels kind of confining, you can't just stop and stand and relax without stomping out a flat spot, because your legs are locked together it's a bit more dangerous if you fall in a tree well or upside down in powder or trying to fall safely or avoid an obstacle. Also for objective performance skis are usually better: in a race course, the number of flips or spins you can do, the distance you can jump. Snowboarding is nice because it's more relaxed than skiing, carving turns is pretty effortless, they float in crappy conditions, the boots are much better for hiking in, they are good for super steep mountaineering stuff where you can slide an edge and hold an ice axe.
I notice I like different music depending on what I'm doing. For snowboarding I like it a little more mellow/relaxed like Bob Marley, for skiing I like it more attacking like Zeppelin.

interesting that in that movie about "the blaze," the only snowboarder in the bunch had to hurry back to his job in bozeman, couldn't wait the extra hour for the snow to soften up, making for bad turns and probably a sore butt to crown his two days of effort.
i sell a bumpersticker which reads: really important people are never in a hurry.

I think I posted this last year in this thread, but oh well.
Anyone who bitches about snowboarders is not a high level skier. If you skied at a high level, you would ski with snowboarders who ride at a similarly high level and have no beef. It's a frigging fact.
If your old you may dislike snowboarders because their sidewards means of motion may confuse you.
Shitty snow sliders are just that. It applies to skiers and riders alike. They are a pain in the ass, but there is no distinction between a shity skier and a shitty snowboarder.
Put on your big boy pants and ride lines that exclude shitty riders of all types.
And I'm a skier.

Snow boarders are lame....
But they ARE entitled to the same snow. They just ruin all the runs.

...But they ARE entitled to the same snow...
No, they are NOT!
The coolest thing I ever saw... A guy on a snowmobile chasing a snow boarder who was poaching a closed run... I think it was at Squaw... They were both zigging and zagging down the slope in a desperate engagement, like a cheeta chasing a gazelle, in scissoring S-turns... Finally the guy on the snowmobile caught up to and RAN OVER THE SNOW BOARDER right under the lift!
It was awesome.

Sounds like, despite a slow start to the season, Kirkwood is still working out the details to BAN SNOWBOARDING.
According to unofficial rumors, there's a deal in the making to offer current snowboarding passholders "replacement passes" at both Northstar and Boreal.

Was just reading that Kirkwood will be acquired by Vail. I guess the Alta deal fell through.
Am curious how the plan to BAN SNOWBOARDING will play out now - Kirkwood has been relatively low key on this lately.
