ate five little hills for dinner on the roadbike. yum-yum-yum-yum love that granny gear punishment. no thoughts but for the now in the steepest of pavement, no joy but the current on those loooong pebble-ridden downhills, sweeping into the cool air like a scythe through wet, ready phloem. my lungs hurt.

I've been doing HiiT sessions on a standard 1/4 mile oval track.
I run all out for 1/8 mile roughly equal to 30 seconds of high intensity. Then I either walk or light jog for 1/8 mile equal to 90 seconds low intensity ---concentrating on nose- in/mouth-out breathing.
Today I did 8 quarter mile repetitions in this 30/90 interval for the first time.(been gradually working up to it)

On Weds. I plan on doing 2 miles of steady state running, then Fri. another 8 rep HiiT.

"Cardio" is aerobic exercise.
Generally it is any kind of activity that substantially increases your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time. Running is a good example.

This is what I don't get...

... aerobic activity as practiced by athletes such as runners, bikers, and XC skiers is activity where you train for 45 min to many hours at a pace where you could, or could nearly, carry on a conversation. This level of training is aerobic and does not involve a "substantial" increase of heart rate unless compared to laying on a sofa...

Should you go beyond aerobic, you would then be doing anaerobic threshold or anerobic training and working on entirely different sets of energy pathways.

When I hear the word "cardio" I envision some weight room type suffering through some intense painfest in the quest to do the damned cardio or some cross-fit type tearing muscles sprinting around the block.

I don't agree with this. I would say that it is also a substantial increase in heart rate compared to everyday life.

I train long and slow with a heart rate of around 140 bpm.
I walk with a heart rate of around 80 and I doubt that I spend much time with a heart rate above 100 in everyday life.

I kind of double my heart rate reserve when training long and slow and I would call that substantial.

I am so in awe. I'm just hoping to pump out a few bike miles today for the first time after foot surgery.

I am so f'ing happyyyyy....went for a 15 mile, mostly flat road bike ride today. The first ride since my foot surgery. Yes. Yes. Yes. I really didn't want to stop as I had no discomfort but I'm trying my best to really not screw up this fix.

Oh you lazy buggers! Sitting around for over a month.

Been running the last few days. Tonight - 5.86 miles in exactly one hour. 761 calories burned. I believe I have now earned that extra hunk of lasagna, and the glass of Malbec.

So I'm using the Noom app on my cell phone to record all this - anyone know how to get it to post to Facebook? I can't make it work.

Or can anyone recommend another app that gives you a map of how far you run and how fast, and tells you how many calories you've burned?

Been engaging in aerobic and anaerobic MTB biking with a little road riding thrown in. Loving it. Weather has turned COLD so it's turned into crack of noon start times.
Playing with tire pressure and I'm getting "hot knife through butter rides" Well kinda.

I'm coming back from the NYC Marathon slowly. A couple of nice runs early this week, but I'm feeling the race still. My last 20 miler, less than 3 weeks out, went much better than the race itself. So I'm guessing, I needed more recovery time.

Getting old suqs.

Well, the running did seem to work, as I kicked the @sses of the three young whippersnappers who tried to keep up with me in Roppel Cave over US Thanksgiving....

With Christmas coming, con mucho cervezas y margaritas, I figured I'd best pre-burn a few calories. Tonight I ran 7.14 miles = 11.5km, and burned 923 calories. My app told me I get three avocados [whoopee sh|t] - just tell me how many beers I earned! So it's 22.36 miles over the last five days. Yay.

I don't think I've ever run 20 miles in a week in my life. What am I thinking? And I still have two days left. And my legs don't even hurt!

And the belt that *someone* made fun of me trying to buckle a few weeks ago now fits a full notch tighter. More room for chocolate.

wow, I think I would sell my soul today for a 7 mile run. And I was running a few 50+ mile weeks only 2 - 3 months ago. That XC this w/e, really cleaned me out.

Ran six miles two days in a row. Trying to beat the Christmas rush like others.
My foot surgery for the neuroma was successful! No foot pain on that foot....now the other foot (osteoarthritic toe) is acting up. Arrgggh

Nice, Susan! I've got seventeen miles under my soles for this week so far, was supposed to guide looking glass today ( & AArt tomorrow) but current state of rain / snow putting that on hold, for now...

This is a very difficult time of year to keep up the good work.

The holidays always present a challenge. Dark. Rain. Snow. Ice. Social obligations. Toss in a family member moving, moving Dad into hospice, coming back immediately for his funeral, cleaning out his home with all my siblings - I never needed the the stress release of running more and have so few opportunities to do so. I am delighted and amazed to have run 12 of the last 14 days, albeit many fewer miles.

Time to get back on track.
