I want to do it with my wife this spring. Problem is, she’s from England and has a thing about obeying the law...not one of my problems. Is there a way of getting permission?!

Cam Burns got permission to climb Shiprock after volunteering to do some trash cleanup so offer them something as the basis for the climbing ban seems to be negotiable. Perhaps even offer to take a couple of the local guides up the regular route since you are know it to familiarize them with what would be required to guide it at some point in the future.
You are a former AAC president so act as a liason with the locals. Who knows what may come from it. The situation is clearly evolving.
