for travel in and out of SFO please note that you can take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) directly to the airport, however, you must add the appropriate travel times...
it runs from many major cities in the Bay Area, it runs a reasonable schedule and it actually cost competitive with a single person driving to the airport.

As for Whole Foods, SFO is located in South San Francisco, not a hugely diversified neighborhood, the closest seems to be in San Mateo, 1010 Park Place (94403), but they are also in Berkeley, and in San Ramon or Walnut Creek (a slight detour from I-580 on your way to the Yosemite). These two towns are your last best hope if you need to go to Whole Foods. There are many other such markets in the Bay Area, you can check out Healthy Highways for a good list of places to get stuff in the area (and any area for that matter).

Sounds like you will need to pick up some gear for camping, though the Mountain Shop in the Valley could help out with some stuff, though it can be pricey. Try Marmot or REI in Berkeley... what might work is if you take BART to Berkeley, do some shopping and meet your ride there... but that's up to you!

If you are a nervous traveller you want to be at SFO no less than 2 hours before your flight. Make sure you "know the drill" to get through security. I don't know how much time it takes to get through the regular security line (I go through the "premium" line because I fly so much). From the Valley to SFO will take a minimum of 4.5 hours, but if you happen to pick a weekend when the SF Giants and the 49ers are playing, and there is a giant parade scheduled, you're going to run into traffic. Add another hour (you're nervous). So a cushy schedule has you leaving the Valley 9 hours earlier... or 6:20am departure... My guess is that if you actually do that you'll be sitting in the airport with a lot of time on your hands.

In my profession, we say "if you're not missing half of your flights you're spending too much time in the airport." But you're in luck, there are lots of flights from SFO to NY... you're flying from Kennedy, right?

Thanks, Ed. I'll probably plan to leave at 7am...That will get me there at noon, with time to be late because of saying goodbye to people. And it has a built-in buffer to futz around along the way.

I know the drill for airport security and even when I make terrible mistakes, like forgetting to remove a tube of toothpaste with more than 4 oz in it from my carry-on, I know one cannot win; they must submit to the theft of the paste.

6:20am sounds ungodly too early. 7am seems reasonable.....

Things to do before Facelift:

1. Wax bike heavily so Jeff's McCain stickers won't stick. Check.

2. Start drinking/climbing training regiment. Check.

3. Load up on Obama stickers for my friend Fatty, who asked me to bring lots. Check.

4. Nice cushy towel for intergalactic travel in case Ed has some news during the event. Check.
