Usually for about a week before, yes. There is a sign they take down when it is OK, so you kinda have to be here and ready.
Not sure if they post it on the web, anyone else?

Having just gotten back from a hike up to yosemite point overlook I would say gauging from the massive amounts of snow from clouds rest to Mt Hoffman we are at least a month behind in snow melt. It's more like april 1st. of a normal year than May 10th. Someone has definitely lit a fire under the plow crew. Olmstead point has got to have some massive slabs on it. If we continue to have unsettled conditions I'm guessing June 11th. If we get some heat maybe June 1st. Whatever happens I hope they aren't copromising safety because of political pressure.

I just hate this weather... It will never open... The high country is gone forever destined to be buried by a blanket of white hell.

Feel a little better now. Carry on

LOL, too funny, my thoughts exactly with the snow flurries obscuring my view of Mono Lake right now, and it's only about 200 yards away!

Olmstead reportedly had 15' piled up.
A truck sized boulder came down on the Blue Slide over the weekend, CalTrans blew it up today.
It needs to warm up and dry out some.
The waiting game has begun.

“…CalTrans blew it up today.”

Damn, that sounds like fun! I wish I could have watched! :)
You know… one of these days that Blue Slide is going to slide big time and the East Portal will be shut down for a LONG time… The geo profs that I work with in Tuolumne mention this now and then. I can wait for that.

It's snowing harder, and accumulating. @ 6,800'. wtf? big fat winter clusters of rimed stellars and graupel smothering the strawberry and Columbine plants. :( <<sigh>> 8 months of winter and counting.

Mono County Officials are saying Memorial Day for the opener.

Park officials are not saying that publicly so who knows.

The road is reportedly plowed to the Meadows already so Memorial Day is believable.

I guess they plowed the Olmsted slab, since they are at the visitor center already:

Generally, do they open the various campgrounds at the same time they open the road?

^^
No, they have to do work on the CGs before opening, and let them dry out. SOME will open quickly, others will not. In Tuolumne, I'm told the issue is toilets/water.

"Mono County Officials are saying Memorial Day for the opener."

It opened around Memorial Day last year so after this winter I'd be stoked if it opens this early. WAY stoked. I miss Tuolumne so much.

Blue Slide is in Lee Vining Canyon, just below the horseshoe bend at Warren Creek (elevation 9,000 ft). It’s one of Mother’s bowling alleys.

Blue Slide and Hwy 120, Lee Vining Canyon

Blue Slide, 8/14/08. A motorist swerved to avoid incoming “bowling balls” and put their rig on its side. I heard the tires screech and then the big crunch. Here, emergency crews are dealing with the accident.

Re. TM Campground opening. Yeah, what Cleo said… They have to wait for Tuolumne Swamp to dry up. That may take a while this year.

Oh yea, okay, Blue Slide. I've def. looked at that and thought "Wow, that looks SKETCHY!". There are always a few rocks laying about on the road there. I wonder how often cars get hit (or nearly hit) - I'd guess several per year.

Yup, sketchy is right. Not the best place to stop to enjoy the view. I’ve always thought that Blue Slide would be a great place to deal with tailgaters… I’d just drive right over the bowling ball with no problem and then wait for the sound of their oil pan being ripped to pieces… :) Lol…

I've been through blue slide during a heavy downpour- that was something to see for sure.

You get to thinking about life and such. You come to conclusions like, if a rock looks like it's going to hit me, and it's not huge, I'm going to let it hit me because it beats swerving off the edge of the abyss.

“…swerving off the edge of the abyss”

Didn’t some lady decide that she’d had enough and did just that, on purpose… a few years back… and it didn’t work? Anyone remember this one? The Crash Test Dummy?

Sorry for the Blue Slide thread drift

So whadaya think, Cleo? H2O saturation by snowmelt or thunderstorm, with some incentive from a little Walker Lane transtension? Done deal?

Seems like Cal Trans keeps undermining the base of the talus slope above the road with that yellow loader. That’s gotta help too! Either that guy has no idea what he’s up against, or he gets paid A LOT!
