Every time I've been in an offwidth I've been at a complete loss for words. Sounds like he's well experienced and equipped to deal with his current challenges.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but you make a good point!

Glad to hear you're better, Steve. I'm not sure my body can make it to Santa Cruz soon, but my heart is with you.

I've not met Mr. Moyles, but I wish him the best in his recovery.

PS: Is this the Stephen Moyles that Google identifies as an inventor?

PPS: An elder statesman of American rock climbing, my old friend Dave Rearick, suffered a stroke a couple of years ago. He now resides in the Meridian Retirement facility in Boulder. I would start a thread but Dave doesn't use the computer.

Very sorry to hear the news about Dave Rearick. He was one of my heroes when I started climbing, not only for his climbs in Yosemite and the Diamond, but for the rumors I heard of his buildering at Cal Tech.

UPDATE
CHANGE OF VENUE
CALL FOR FRIENDS

So -
less than a week after his accident
Steve has been moved from the hospital in San Jose
to Skilled Nursing Care in Santa Cruz
http://www.santacruzhealthcare.com/
The current predicted length of stay is about one month
but may be longer. ("Whatever it takes"....)

He is strong, Our Scuffy.
Prognosis is good. The road is open.
You can see the clouds moving away
but, as I keep hearing,
This Takes Time.

Now start even greater challenges:

1. The recovery/rehabilitation work !!!
which many of you know about.

2. Preserving his equanimity in perhaps difficult surroundings,
that is, while in an environment of people who are also in
deep trouble or simply "out of it". (I can foresee big mood
swings possible & hope the people there are savvy about such
things.)

CALL FOR FRIENDS

Having live people come by and talk about the things he knows and loves, from the life that has brought him such confirmation,
is majorly important.

Friends...Climbers...Dancers....Step Up.
and, if you post on ST, someone in the room will read it to him. For example, Scuffy was wanting to tell me about "Mungeclimber" !coming by and he scrolled through
the entries till he came to his post. So impressive.
Someone else can chime in about Facebook
which is beyond my ken.

Now I take the liberty to include excerpts from a letter from Mike Bolte to AJF, for more ideas of progress.

OK! got Steve checked in here:
http://www.santacruzhealthcare.com/
It is a combination rehabilitation center nursing home so he is one of
the youngsters there. Staff was very attentive. I'm collecting a few
things for him (some changes of clothes, books etc.)...
Had a nice drive back to Santa Cruz. He is still struggling getting
his words and thoughts out, but was in good spirits to be out of the
hospital.
best, Mike//

So appreciated, Mike!
Santa Cruz is more of a haul for me (Amy) than hopping in the car
and blasting to and fro to San Jose…
I plan go again early in the week.
I know he has many friends down there who want to help.
Do it.
For that, and for the visits so far, Thank you.
And Thank you for the Many Great Posts so far.
Funny, serious, whatever you would be saying if you met and were talking.
And the admirable Mr. Cook is back in town.

I understand he has a window now.

Beautiful sunny, cloudy day here in the Bay.
It was. It took a long time to type this.
Respectfully yours,

Mungeclimber

Nothing came through
but thank you anyway.
I somehow mixed up avatars -
and substituted another name for MUNGECLIMBER
in the above post. God knows why.
So sorry. Pure delirium.
Please still talk to me when we meet.
All the best,
Amy Jo

It should be fixed now.

hey there say, amyjo... i emailed here... too...
i need an address, etc...

email me, please... will i just send stuff to you, or someone, that
can get it to him...

?

say, scuffy!! hang in there... you will feel so GOOD, after
you reach the FINISH line, in all this...

keep thinking about how the athletes feel, when they CROSS, and
you will have that 'invigorating' push, that you need!

say, i am a dancer--try to start some slow dance movements, it is
VERY good for the brain...

even, just arm movements, to soft music, first, if you
can't get up much, yet... :)

keep on keeping on, :)

Hey Scuffy!

Looking around, you are on a good road, with all of us with you to be here along the way.

You are amazing and always put a smile in my mind, with your wonderful and distinctive ways rambling in the quiet places hidden amongst the rabble of the modern world.

For me, a child of the concrete and skyscrapers, you open a world of the hidden places alive with life and fun times.

"over there" you say, waving to the indistinct gap choked with undergrowth. "It's that way"

I stumble through, still hearing the bubble of the crowds in the background. "Quiet feet" my partner tells me as I thrash through the gap.
I hear you chuckle as we all move through the hidden gate, which feels like the mystical third and a half floor from some inconsequential story.

"All of it is really about moments and vectors" you say, leading the way. "Vectors and moments. Once you've got that, you have what you need to do what you want."

Vectors and Moments? I feel like a lame water buffalo thrashing through the brush, but I like the thought and roll it around in my head. I love it when you make me think of concepts like this.

We step into a clearing, a perfect grassy ledge, open and waiting to be enjoyed. The babble of people is not so far away, and undeniably removed from us. On this grassy ledge, they are like the susurration of the wind.

We're here, in the hidden place that you are generous enough to show us - and I'm living a life of vectors and moments.

Thanks for sharing your world with me, thanks for being a part of mine, and I can’t wait til we get to share more time.

Cheers!

Forgot about that Vedauwoo poster. Got it saved now -- Scuffy, Tarbuster, and I. That blue rope is no longer with us, I'm afraid.
