I'll cross post because Lolli may not read all the bizarre threads...

...in today's NYTimes, in the "Science" section is an article by Natalie Angier
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/05/science/05angier.html?ref=science
with the concluding paragraph:
Interestingly, another recent study found that when Americans were given the chance to construct their version of the optimal wealth gradient for America, both Republicans and Democrats came up with a chart that looked like Sweden’s. There’s no need to insult the meat in the land of lutefisk.

the paper referred to is here

The others hate Sweden because he has sucked it up economically and is kicking ass now:

Unlike much of the rest of Europe, Sweden is roaring ahead

"I would draw a long serious comic about their love."

Hmmmm...Would it be something about mutual appreciation and respect?
or something with knee-high boots and velcro gloves? ;)

I like Sister Sweden WAAAYYY more than Sister US.
Is there something wrong with me?

Not a joke about the guns in Svalbard. The Norsk Polar Institut issued us a 7.62mm Mauser rifle when I was there on a scientific expedition in the 80's. Fortunately the only Polar Bear we saw was skeleton remains on the beach.

At the annual midsummer festival at the Scandinavian Centre here, there is a wife-carrying contest. Quite fun.

So far the Norwegians, Swedes, Danes and Finns are constituents of the Centre, and probably the Icelanders will be joining. The Centre used to be the Norwegian seamens' centre for Vancouver - the Norwegian merchant navy had similar facilities in many large ports, so their sailors had somewhere reasonably comfortable and safe to stay.

The Scandinavian Centre in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver.
(Formerly the Roald Amundsen Centre, when it was the seamens' home.)

The Canadian government is currently wrestling with how we will commemorate the war of 1812 - 14, in which Canadian/British forces overall at least held invading US forces to a draw. Plus we burnt down the White House, and they burnt down our legislature. A delicate question.

Hamlet died from kissing poor Yorick's lips? Alas, I had NO idea.
Why the Mustang in Poland? That's REALLY weird. I thought all they had was Yugos and Ladas.

Strange, there are some regular posters who stereotype all the time, but never post to this thread. I wonder why?

They don't have much perspective, a sense of humour, or know much about Scandinavia, but the latter isn't a prerequisite.

Maybe I'll post some cartoons mocking Canadian foibles. Hopefully Lolli would welcome them.

Once again, thank you Lolli.
I've seen two such films. One in the Netherlands, and another at an international film fest in Salt lake city.
Both were listed as, "dark comedies". Now I see, they're more dark than comedy.
I thought the comedy was somehow lost in translation.

Not suprising the geographic ignorance. I've heard ~10% of Americans don't know Alaska is one of the 50 states.
