The Apollo 20 hoax is a story told in a series of YouTube videos of a phony manned lunar mission whose purpose was to retrieve ancient alien artifacts from the moon. Thierry Speth, a French video artist, claimed to be the perpetrator of the hoax on 9 July 2007 on Need2Know.eu, an internet bulletin board.[1] However, no news organization has ever attempted to verify Speth's claim. The videos have drawn over 200,000 views since their appearance on YouTube.
In April, 2007 a series of videos began appearing on YouTube under the username retiredafb telling the story of Apollo 20.[2] Then on 25 March 2007, Italian ufologist Luca Scantanburlo interviewed somebody who identified himself as William Rutledge who claimed to be the commander of the Apollo 20 crew. Rutledge also claimed to be the account owner of retiredafb. However, Scantanburlo never met Rutledge in person because he conducted the interview over Yahoo! Messenger .[3]
During the interview, Rutledge claimed Apollo 20 was a top-secret mission launched in mid August of 1976 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara, California and conducted jointly by the United States and the former Soviet Union. He said the other mission members were American Leona Snyder (an apparently fictitious person) and former Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov, the first human being to walk in space. The purported lunar landing site of the mission was near Delporte crater on the far side of the moon. Rutledge said the videos show that he and Leonov discovered the remains of an ancient lunar civilization.[4][5] He also said they brought back artifacts to earth for study, including a hibernating female alien.
Four months later, video artist Speth claimed responsibility for the hoax and explained that the entire story was fabricated.

The hoaxer began posting the videos on April Fool's Day, a hint that the story was nothing more than an elaborate prank. He/she has since moved most of the videos to Revver.com under the same username (retiredafb).[6] However, others are scattered throughout YouTube posted by several account users, thereby making it difficult to determine the true identity of the hoaxer. Each continues to draw thousands of views.
Despite the realistic appearance of the videos, amateurs have easily debunked them on YouTube and elsewhere on the internet.[citation needed]
The videos are short, each only lasting a couple of minutes. If viewed in their intended sequence, they tell a partial story of the mission, starting with astronauts boarding Apollo 20 and ending with the extraordinary "discoveries" on the moon. They include the following images:

Like many hoaxes, this story is a mixture of facts and fiction. The starting point for it are photos that Apollo 15 astronauts took while in lunar orbit. The photos show what look like a cigar-shaped object resting in a crater. The hoaxer used these photos to create the image of pock-marked alien spacecraft on the moon. The NASA photos are real.[10] However, NASA never claimed they include images of alien spacecraft. The object in question is nothing more than a natural part of the lunar terrain.
In truth, Apollo 20 was a mission that never got off the ground -- literally. It was one of three lunar missions NASA cancelled due to lack of funding along with Apollos 18 and 19. The last NASA lunar mission was Apollo 17, launched in 1972. The next Apollo mission was the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project coordinated by the United States and the former Soviet Union in 1975. However, its mission was to remain in low earth orbit and to dock with a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft, something it accomplished successfully. Some mistakenly refer to that mission as Apollo 18.
Some of the stages for the Saturn V rockets intended for NASA’s three cancelled lunar missions had already been constructed before their cancellation. According to the hoaxer's story, these were all used on lunar missions for Apollos 18, 19 and 20. In reality NASA used one of these to launch Skylab into orbit in 1973. The others are on display at three American space centers: the John F. Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida; the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas and the United States Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Thanks for mentioning updating Google Earth. I did so also recently and didn't realize that they have included better resolution base imagery from Lunar Orbiter Mosaic for the Moon. Very cool. All I had to do was click on the radio button and voila!
Although with the newest LRO imagery posted and available we wouldn't be doing this. Everyone would know the truth then.
So I re-did my work and now it is much improved with better lat./long. and it is now possible to kinda measure the craft on the better imagery, although it is still very pixelated and blurred.
One thing people need to realize, there are indeed faked videos within this story. Anyone who has been following this story since April of 2007 knows this. The thing is, there is real, mixed with fake. It takes time to sort through it all.
This is classic COINTELPRO and our government has a really long established track record, and long time experience at doing this sort of thing. Mix real with fake, then you have plausible deniability, can denie it, yet at the same time let real info get through. This works to debunk the story within most people's mind. If some of it is faked then they can buy into it all being faked. Voila! story debunked. But not so fast. It also serves in allowing a story to stew and simmer for a long, long time, allowing people to get used to the idea over long periods of time, depressing the shock value.
I have no doubt that the massive object is there, and it is intelligently designed. Did they land and go over and retrieve an alien? I don't know about that. I do believe at the least, that NASA Apollo missions flew over for a closer look at a minimum. This maybe is all that Apollo 20 did. It could be they never landed. Wanted to, but didn't. The alien footage maybe a very elaborate hoax. A what if we did, what would we have found?
I try to stick with the imagery that looks real and can be verified and measured against what we know is real. Photogrammetry can be done with all images and there are cross-referencing techniques that we can do to know and verify if the imagery is real, or faked with bad clay models or digital fakes.
It is much harder faking imagery within the Ingress Room of the Apollo Missions, within the LM, real human faces, and real imagery from NASA Apollo missions, that have indeed taken many images of the site on the farside of the Moon.
It will take time to sort through and really cross reference, and validate all the good imagery using techniques of photogrammetry. What needs to be done is to cross reference all the really good flyover imagery that appears real in all of its form, to those images that we know are real and officially from NASA. Photogrammetry can do this. It takes time and patience, but it can be done. The stuff that looks like clay modelling is clay modelling. I don't even consider that.
Even the best faked modelling, and faked imagery can not be done so well as to mimic exactly all the measurements that can be done and the ratios measured and compared between suspect imagery and real authentic imagery. That is why careful, precise photogrammetry works.
And like I said, photogrammetry can also be done with the human face to help verify the identity of someone.

COINTELPRO has never stopped. All US government agencies into spying and intelligence probably have there own programs: FBI, CIA, DOD, etc.

On Wikileaks not too long ago you could look at and download the entire DOD FM Manual on COINTELPRO used within Special Forces. That manual is probably still up for browsing and download. Read it and your eyes will be opened. Just how far do you think our government is willing to go to fake things?

Physics travel restrictions on beings on different dimensions are probably different. Do they charge for carry on luggage?
We make so many assumptions about things that are far out of league of understanding. We don't know what our next major technological shifts and breakthroughs are going to be, much less for folks who have may have had advanced civilization for millions of years, not just 10,000.
Like Seti. What make them think aliens would be using radiowaves to communicate?

The Motivation for hoaxing videos on Youtube is a program called Adsense revenue sharing by Google. I think it's what Chris uses on Supertopo.
With the kind of view numbers these UFO/Ark Apollo 20 conspiracy videos generate it would be quite lucrative.
