Foxy Loxy at Mount Rainier National Park. This little feller was darn near tame. Hungry I suspect. He hung with me for a good 5 minutes.

Great photos! so many "best of show."

A mystery owl that exploded out of some foliage 3' in front of me last summer. Made a heleva squawking and used effective threat gestures to keep me away. Pine woodland at about 7,000 ft. in S. Idaho.

Baby Great Gray, that had fallen out of the nest? I think it was 10-12" tall.

Endangered coho salmon are returning.

So far San Geronimo Valley has more fish than the past two years combined (not hard to do when one considers the last 2 years were nearly zero)

This year looks to be below average, but is more than zero.

Great Photos from everyone.

Kudos to Crazy Tom for the long antenna beetle (gally-napper) you shot at City of Rocks and Broke-down for one of his pet bucks.

On our 2007 Sawtooth Mtn. trip, Kim bragged about her lightweight rain-fly and closeness to nature. The local marmot urinated all over her sleeping bag: to reinforce how close she was to nature.

Tom: Gally-Napper is a "southernism" I learned from the ex. It was a catch-all for any un-identified large insect. I gradually pared the definition down to large un-identified coleoptera (beetles).

With some digging on Google, I find this definition at WikiAnswers: A galley napper also know as a galley nipper is a Crane Fly.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly.

I confess: your beetle is some type of "Longhorn" beetle. There are thousands of species of "Longhorn" beetle in North America. ihttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longhorn_beetle

Another summer shot; typical for white-tails in the South.
Brokedownclimber: that is a big boy on your ranch; it would be considered a 10 point over here.

The mystery owl sure looks like a Poor Will to me. We have two varieties on this side the Chuck-will's-widow and the Whip-poor-will. All belong to the Order Goatsuckers; so named because of the 17th century fear they stole milk from goat's udders at night.

A good place to look up bird info is the Cornell Lab of Ornithology website:

groundup, what kind of snake is that? Did it catch the fish? Could it realistically hope to swallow it?
